It's a neat service but raises some questions about phone service and GPS, especially with tracking when the phone is not in use.

Why? Some of the arteries in different cities are great ways to beat freeway traffic. I checked how accurate it is by using one of the arteries on the way home. It wasn't far off.

this is new? it's been on the iPhone since the 2007 release. i'm confused.

It has not been on iPhones or any other device until recently. What you were seeing was city data being used.

For cities that provided arterial data, yes.

They had a beta program a while back and you may have been included in that.

Before that, Google Maps on the iPhone only included freeways.
