I was thinking about switching to completely watching television via the internet and not getting cable. I figured there is a flood of stuff on Hulu + projectfreetv + surfthechannel, that the only reason why I would want to keep cable is to watch live sports which I think I could go to a friends house to see since I don't watch them that regularly.

Just wondering if anyone's "made the switch" or done something similar and had any thoughts about it....

Is it because you don't watch TV or you just stream everything from the comp to the TV?

Quality is a big factor for me, and while streaming video has come leaps and bounds lately (NCAA tourney CBSsports.com HD stream was amazing), it still doesn't even come close to a dedicated cable/satellite/IPTV feed.

Chris & I don't have cable. We don't watch a lot of TV, but we stream almost everything we're interested in from Hulu. Other stuff we torrent.

You guys who watch streams over the internet, what kind of display are you watching it on? Coomputer monitor? Laptop? TV via computer? Or Xbox or some other console on a TV?

Yeah, I'm curious about this too. What would be the best way to do TV via computer?

Throughout school it was free in the dorms or already provided in the apartment. When I moved to a house, I had to pay for it because we had to split the bills, but I hardly ever watch TV. Even right now, I sold my television when I moved in October, and my roommate has 42" HD LCD with DirecTV HD and like all the movie channels, but I may watch maybe 30 minutes a week, and that's a serious maybe.

TV via computer. My laptop has DVI out, TV has DVI in. Easy peasy. Our TV doesn't use the full screen for PC in, but it's a huge TV so it hardly matters. A newer TV would probably support higher resolution and use the full screen. Streaming vid is pretty standard quality, but I can find HD torrents for some shows.

yeah but you still have to fiddle a bunch with resolutions and refresh rates to get a proper signal. Most of the time you have some overscan.

Just watched a whole episode of Family Guy on hulu.com, really nice site. Very brief commercials, and fairly decent quality. Though I watched it from my computer chair, not the most comfortable. Might have to get out the stuff to build a media PC or something to go next to the TV.

I have been trying to get rid of cable for a while but can't seem to do it, mostly because of college football. My wife went to Texas and would probably go crazy if she wasn't able to watch the football games (she's more into Texas football than most people).

With Hulu, I've been playing with Boxee and though it's not well supported, it still works for me. Most of the shows I watch are on network television (House, The Office, the news), with the exception of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and South Park.

blaarg, aren't you in Europe? How do you watch Hulu? I tried to watch it while I was in Frankfurt this past weekend and had to use a proxy in the U.S. It messed with the speeds a bit.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but the AppleTV seems like a good choice for what I want. I can watch local news, then download a show I want to watch (or use Boxee), or put in on my iPhone for travel, the only downside is that I still would not get college football.

How much do you pay per show you download on there? I guess you'd have to find your break even point. My U-verse bill is $120/mo, with the TV portion accounting for something like $80. So how many shows could I get for $80 off of some download service (and how long do you get to keep them, can you make copies/DVDs/etc)? And of course, still don't have sports. And though it's a little more hassle, with cable/sat/whatever you can always record your shows to the computer for use on there or some portable device. I think the first cable/sat/iptv company to make transferring your recorded shows to the computer or a portable device is the one that really wins over a huge market share.
