So I guess I'm meeting my bf's parents this week. I'm not really sure what to get them, if I should get them each something or just one gift. People say food is the best idea, but I feel like chocolates are rather generic no matter how specialized they are.
Oh we're going to dinner (actually every meal it seems like), should I offer to pay? I wasn't technically invited to their place. -------------------- I go to the maize and blue

Oh and don't kill the family dog and cook it for them! That's a huge turnoff

I know a lot of people give that when they first meet someone.

If you want to go the food route, I'd recommend giving them something you've made yourself, e.g. cookies or banana nut bread. As for paying for dinner, ask your boyfriend what his family might expect. The parents themselves will give you clues... if they grab the bill immediately and plunk down a credit card without batting an eye, don't sweat it. If you're going out to multiple meals, though, you might offer to cover the entirety of one of the less expensive ones (probably a lunch).
In my family, who pays largely depends on who's there. If it's my dad & step-mom, they're going to pay for the meal unless you absolutely insist otherwise. When I last went out with my mom & stepdad, though, I ended up paying for the entire meal (6 people) because I got tired of watching them whisper over the bill trying to decide what card/checking account to pay it with. -------------------- |

I like plants, but I'm not sure if they're plant people. I don't really want to make them anything, I don't feel like it's very appropriate for my situation.
Yeah, offering to pay for a meal is a good idea since we'll be eating out multiple times (I just worry about the number of people that are going to be there). -------------------- I go to the maize and blue

How long have you two been dating? Why don't get take a nice picture of you two and frame it. I would only do this idea, though, if you have been dating for longer than a year or if it's a very serious relationship.

One more idea: Things Remembered is a store they have at almost every mall, and they have a TON of great gift ideas, and they can engrave there. Might want to check it out.

Hmm, I need something a little less personal. They're "country folks" (not exactly, I'm not sure how to describe them), I'm not sure if wine from where I'm from is too uppity. I think they'd appreciate something a little bit more "down home".
