Interestingly enough, the Heil Hitler salute used to be the standard procedure for salutations of superior officers, the flag of the united states, or the commander in chief. It had roman roots. They changed it to hand over the heart for saying the pledge and saluting with right arm above the right brow just after WWII because of all the images it conjured up of hitler.
