Ok, I'm have some, shall we say... "interesting", computer problems. I use ZoneAlarm as my firewall, it works well, I'm happy with it, yadda yadda. Anywho, yesterday I go to update it because a new build is out. Well, something screwed up in the midst of the upgrade and ZoneAlarm ran, but some parts of it weren't fully functional. No big deal, I think, I'll just install it, do a clean install, and it'll be all good.
I uninstalled it just through Add/Remove programs, tried installing it, no dice. It won't install, gives me some error msg regarding a missing dll. I tried looking into specifics on the dll, downloaded it, put it where it needed to be, and tried running the installation again. And my computer restarts! It boots back up, dll is gone, installation file is gone. I was a bit frustrated with it by that point, so I gave up for the day. Today, I went through the registry and got rid of all entries that referenced ZoneLabs, figuring that maybe something with that is screwing up the installation. Tried installing ZoneAlarm again, BAM! Computer restarts. Loads up again, installation file is gone. Try it again, same thing. Bah! Anybody got a clue as to why the fuck my computer would be restarting when I go to install this damn program? I downloaded the installer straight from ZoneLab's website, so I know it shouldn't have a virus or anything, but I've never seen something like this happen before. -------------------- |

Honestly, I would buy a $100 used computer from somone and put Linux of FreeBSD on it, and not even screw around with all that personal firewall crap. That stuff is WAY more trouble than it's worth if you asked me. You could seriously buy a 6 year old computer and put Linux on it, and have that act as your firewall and it would be ten times better than Zonealarm .... combine that with Snort and make up some perl scripts that parse the snort data into HTML (if you are feelin spunky anyways) and you've basically got something that's even better than a Checkpoint firewall, for $100.

I'm not gonna buy another computer just to use it as a firewall. And before anybody suggests it, I'm not going to use my router firewall either, because hardware firewalls are a bitch to customize compared to a software one.

I don't think it's overkill. I also don't think it's intrusive... it usually just runs quietly in the background for me.

I think I really fucked up my computer this time. I decided to try a system restore, computer restarted (as it's supposed to), and now windows won't load. Tried "load windows normally", "last known working configuration", "safe mode with networking"... now I'm trying regular safe mode and I hope to god it works. Otherwise... not sure what the hell to do?

actually, have you installed any StarForce-protected games? This sounds like one of StarForce's retard protections schemes.
check the list here:http://www.glop.org/starforce/list.php yes, believe it or not, starforce installs a driver that has level-0 control over your computer. That's kernel-level access. If it thinks you're doing something that could be some kind of copy-protection circumvention (ie, using any kind of disc backup software, burning cd's, installing/uninstalling system files like DLLs...) then it WILL just randomly reboot your computer. Most companies are dropping starforce like a bad habit due to the extreme negative backlash against them for being general douchebags and essentially taking control of user's machines. -------------------- WAIT. Well it booted up in safe mode (w/o networking), so I'm not completely fucked. I tried rebooting after that... still didn't work, so I'm now undoing the system restoration. Hopefully it'll boot up properly after that. Beyond that... well, I might try installing an older version of ZoneAlarm and then updating it (I've got some older installation files). If that doesn't work, I guess I'll look at Windows Firewall. I've had ZoneAlarm since before Windows had a built-in firewall, so that's what I've continued to use and it's served me well... until now.
