Impala: household income is higher because more women are in the workforce (more 2-income households). I have read, however, that individual incomes are down, when adjusted for inflation. This was a couple of months ago, so I don't remember the source... just saying.

that would make sense, except those incomes are going to the same costs of living... the buying power of that money is much greater. hence households having bigger homes, more cars, more luxuries, etc.

here's some data from the census on individual incomes:
http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/histinc/p36ar.html

shows that men's individual incomes have been pretty consistent since about 1972, while women's have increased pretty steadily since the beginning of the data (1955). and the ups and downs pretty much correlate to the recessions throughout the times.

insane amount of data here... can look up just about any stat you want

Nah, people have bigger homes because they take out adjustable rate mortgages and buy more house than they can afford. More cars because they're getting 7-year car loans.

Nah, I'm just messin'... well, sorta. The car loan thing isn't the norm (though some people do it), but we all know about the trouble caused by ARMs lately... (and those darn LEGs too). tongue.gif

maybe gas hitting 10 bucks a gallon will be what it takes to get american people and american businesses to do something. i frankly am not all that scared about it. would mean higher demand for alternative sources and products which would lower the prices and make them more available. and id realllllly love two solar panels for my house (but i can already get fed. grants and tax credits to get these!)

you only say that because of your new financial freedom.

what you're saying is like saying you're happy the holocaust happened, to hieghten racial persecution awareness.

for someone who's all about preventive measures, you sure did switch easily enough to "let the world learn the hardway" mentality, when it's a subject that impacts you less.

It cost me almost $7 to get a single meal from McDonalds today with nothing extra. Inflation is ridiculous right now, Cathryn. Are you living with your parents or something? Because EVERYTHING is going up in price.

your first problem - buying 7 bucks worth of food at mcdonalds. if you went to the grocery store, shopped properly you could make at least 2 meals for less than that

I'll go home to a house with 5 TVs, 4 vehicles in the driveway/garage, with 2000 sqft to heat/cool, pay my house note, truck note, all the bills for the house I'm living in, then go out to eat and buy myself and my parents food, and then complain about how men's incomes have gone down since 1970 when people had 1 house, paid less for all forms of energy, and "only" had 1-2 vehicles and certainly not more than 1-2 TVs

yeah value your time - thats important. but you should value your finances and health 1st. isnt the original complaint about the high prices of things in the first place?

I'm not complaining about high prices of things. In fact just the opposite, I'm trying to explain why things aren't that bad. and shopping at the store vs getting food from a restaurant doesn't imply a person's priority of their health/time/finances.

If you get married and have kids, things become a little more tight.

Would you want to stand over a hot stove when 8 months pregnant to make a meal? It sucks ass being this pregnant. I've gained weight and my back doesn't like it at all. I literally can't stand in one spot for 3 minutes. I either have to be sitting or walking. I cook quick meals, but when I want a good solid meal with meat in it, I have to go to McDonalds or Chick Fil A. Those are the only two places I can stand their chicken. I'm not a big meat eater at all so I don't eat lunch meat and shit like that. Honestly, since restaurants stopped using trans fat, fast food isn't AS BAD for the heart. Plus, I eat a LOT of fruit to supplement that. I made chicken a couple of weeks ago. It tasted awesome, but I quite literally couldn't eat it because it grossed me out since I prepared it. Weird. I know. It still has more to do with the fact that my back is killing me. Going from 115 to 145 is a bitch.
