Curious if anyone on here has bought into either format. I got weak a while back and got a Blu-ray standalone player to go with my HD-DVD standalone. Seems like the format "war" is kind of at a stalemate for the time being. After having both for a while, I have to admit they both look equally amazing. I guess it's just up to which studios support which format exclusively in the end.

I think that Blu-Ray is the superior format, but Sony is kind of dickish, so I'm up in the air on which I want to win.
Maybe a magical 3rd format will stomp both of them and rid us of this ridiculous format war. -------------------- |

Like Touchstone just went HD i think and I think Disney is blu-ray. I could be wrong though |

So I just realized the poll is pretty much retarded as far as the choices, but oh well my bad.
The studios choose which format to press out media in, and if memory serves it's something like this: Blu-ray exclusive: Disney Fox MGM Sony HD-DVD exclusive: Dreamworks Paramount Universal Both: Warner Obviously there's a bunch of smaller studios but these are the major ones. Warner is kinda the linchpin. If they went exclusive to either side that would probably be the side that wins out. As far as the format itself, after a ton of research, watching lots of movies on both formats, etc, they're essentially identical. The only real difference is the disc capacities, which end up being a moot point. Blu-ray has capacities of 25GB & 50GB, where HD-DVD has 15GB, 30GB, and 51GB. They both show the same VC-1 or MPEG4 encoded 1920x1080x60Hz video, and both support the latest surround audio formats like Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD. In the end I'd say the HD-DVD format might have a slight edge as far as all players since the start were required to have ethernet ports. Not to mention the format's spec was finalized from day 1, whereas Blu-ray has had a couple of versions so far. If you have the spare cash to jump into either format, it is friggin amazing, seriously. Most of the players still have deals where you can grab several free movies with purchase. |

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 just because it is one of the cheapest ways to get a blue ray player. Plus I'll get to play NCAA08 too. And I want to take advantage of that offer to get 5 free movies even though the selection sucks. I'm just hoping blu ray discs don't become defunct like sony's umd movies.

The PS3 is actually considered by most of the high end AV peeps to be one of the best Blu-ray players available. It is also the cheapest player. It's just that a lot of people don't want a PS3/game system in their setup, or don't like the fact that the damn thing doesn't come with a remote, or IR remote functionality (the remote you can buy separately is a proprietary bluetooth remote).
The best standalone so far is the one I picked up, the Panasonic DMP-BD30K. I've played a bunch of different movies on it so far with zero problems. Stay away from the Samsung Blu-ray players, they've had major issues. |

I don't have one and don't plan on getting one either. The difference between HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and regular DVD is so minute that I couldn't give a shit about either format. I won't be buying one until HD-DVD wins out and all the players cost less than $150. If Blu-Ray wins I'll never be buying one and you wouldn't be able to give me one for free.

The difference is staggering on most movies (even old movies). 1920x1080x60Hz vs 720x480x30Hz is a pretty big difference even just on paper. |
