Be careful about eating raw tomatoes for a bit: http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/19522929.html

So yeah, yesterday I went to the grocery store... gal in front of me had some kind of tomatoes, they showed up as "recalled" when the cashier punched them in. We were all confused. She decided to not get the tomatoes since she had some at home already. Well I get up there and I've got romas... also ring up as recalled. The cashier is doubly confused. Nobody knows why this is and figures someone fucked up the computers. She, with my ok, rings them up differently to get past the recall notice and I go on my merry way.

Flash forward to this morning... I walk into work and see a bulletin posted about salmonella contamination in raw tomatoes. Haha, whoopsie, all is explained!

Still not gonna stop me from eating them tonight...

Edit: Here's another news article: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/03/salmonell...s.ap/index.html

Authorities say don't eat raw Roma or full-sized round tomatoes -- other than those sold attached to the vine or grown at home.

I usually like to buy those cherry tomatoes that are still on the vine. awesome stuff.

Yeah, just sit around and snack on them.... mmmmm tasty!

I'm growing my own tomatoes, bell peppers, jalepenos, Thai peppers, and various herbs this season, so no contamination worries for me!!! =D

When I have a yard, I too will garden hardcore. Right now I have pots of cilantro, chives, and grape tomatoes that are doing jack, jiddly, and shit (alive, but not really growing, much less producing herbs and such). And a random basil plant that popped out of nowhere and looks fucking fantastic.

Me too, home grown tomatoes just taste better.

So far we have tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, cilantro, bell peppers, banana peppers, lettuce, and rapini.

Crap, need to plant some lettuce and cilantro as well.

Is it too late in the season to plant onions?

I'm not sure. My mom is the garden guru, so I'll ask her tomorrow.

I just googled "planting onions" and this is what came up:
http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden.../h247onion.html

QUOTE
Sets are onions that were planted from seed last year. Sets for white, yellow and sometimes red onions are available from mail order catalogs and even some grocery stores. You can raise your own sets but you'll need to direct seed them in the garden by July so they can grow big enough to harvest and store in fall.

Looks like the outbreak is spreading quickly. Now people in 16 states have been affected by the Salmonella. Recall has now been expanded nationwide.
