but either way the reason our prices are high is because we have to import in the first place. We didn't used to have to import any oil. even if we did drill alaska, we would still be importing most of our oil.....alaska could not support the US alone. the only way we will get off of oil is for car companies to actually try to make cars that dont rely on gas. -------------------- bored...so i did this

The US pretty much never exported oil, only during pre ww2 did it. I've worked in the Oil Industry and Dogmeat would be a good resource. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_Oil_...920_to_2005.png While I agree with the graph, we do export the refined product in some cases. A lot of these exports are solvents that go to Canada, Mexico, and Central America for use in chemical plants. But other than that, you're spot on, we do not export oil (as oil). Could we export if we drilled off of Florida and Alaska? More than likely but I doubt we would. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Looks like you're right though, everything I find now though correlates to what you're saying (around the 1940s or so). |

Well don't expect that to be the case for a long time. Even if somehow you could wave a magic wand and make all cars electric overnight, where does that electricity come from? We might as well go take over the UAB or something. It's gonna take a breakthrough like useable fusion reactors or something before we can get the kind of power we'd need to power the 250 million vehicles in the US. |

i wasnt trying to pinpoint you out that just came up to mind as statements that are thrown around here. and thank you for that and ive been trying to be lax towards you as well i was going to go back and delete my post because its just too tiring getting the same old response but since you quoted it ill just do a quick summery - i think everyone should be nicer and more willing to discuss issues without cutting someone down. because everyone on this forum knows a little more about something then the next person and so on and so on. thats how life is I think your first mistake was trying to have a legitimate debate over the internet. Other than getting into a flame war, I really no longer see the point. Because honestly, have you ever been in an online argument where after someone makes a post a light comes on in your head and you suddenly agree with their side of the coin? Because I haven't, and I have yet to witness it with anyone else. Feel free to disagree. -------------------- ![]() |

Because honestly, have you ever been in an online argument where after someone makes a post a light comes on in your head and you suddenly agree with their side of the coin? It's not about changing people's minds, it's about open discussion, getting several points of view about a topic, and fully exploring those points of view. I for one thoroughly enjoy seeing everyone's point of view about certain topics. It keeps the mind sharp. And although we fiercely defend our viewpoints, I think we all do actually open up a little and see the other person's point, even if we don't necessarily agree with it. It might surprise a lot of you to know that I actually recycle. It came from when Erin lived in my house, and my other roommate and I drank 12 oz cans of stuff like crazy, and when she came and lived with us she got a few different bins and asked us to toss our cans in one, plastic in another, etc. If for no other reason than we simply didn't have to take out the damn trash as often, it got me recycling. Point being, she of course is/was a treehugger and that's why she wanted us to do it, but by looking at it objectively and seeing it from another view, it seemed like a reasonable enough thing to do. |

I think your first mistake was trying to have a legitimate debate over the internet. I disagree with you. I'm quite a bit of a fence jumper. I read each person's posts and think about it. Sometimes I do see another person's reasoning, and I start to think about it in a way I didn't before. Other times, of course, I'm like "what the hell is this person thinking" and then other times I see their point but I disagree.

Actually, i think when people actually have a debate, instead of just flaming, it enlightens everyone reading and makes it much more enjoyable. Example: When you got on your symantics thing for illegals, by just calling people idiots you were instantly disregarded, by at least me, and i didn't bother reading much if anything you said. Where as, when you explained that you were in Louisana and had a different view, it was an actual good point. I DID change my view a little so that i agree some states obviously don't need spanish, but in places like TEXAS it should be mandatory. Of course education is purely a STATE decided matter, so some making optional, vs some making mandatory, makes sense. Anyway, I disagree that actual conversation on the internet can't be enlightening. Though flaming has its very fun place, it doesn't ALWAYS have to be done. -------------------- |

I wish I had some insight on this oil business, being that I currently work for a company in the accounting department....but all of our refineries are in Venezuela.....so we spend a lot of money on materials for them, but also a large portion is exporting and shipping stuff. I just know that between January 1st and now, we've spent about 850 million on our refineries.
