not doing anything, being apathetic, not giving to the society and environment in which you live makes you a worthless human being and a waste of space! imho

So how do you feel about the people you help who do nothing to help themselves?

Do you feel that is always the case?

Certain people on this board seem to think so...

No I don't as I stated in the other thread.

I am however challenging her statement made previously that people who do nothing and sit around are wastes of space.

If she honestly believes that then she believes some of the people she is dedicating her life to are wastes of space.

So how do you feel about the people you help who do nothing to help themselves?

typically these people are under circumstance, family of origins, medical issues etc that the average upper class person could not even imagine. even so, there are some people that are just "bad" i believe. but even these people deserve all the help/chances/opportunities there are. "help" can also be a prison, a reformed rehabilitation prison mind you. i know itll come up so ill clarify, im not talking about releasing pedos to neighbors with a hug saying "just try to do better", thats not helping. but for the majority of people, they are capable and willing to help themselves they just need to know how or be given access to opportunities.

these people arent wastes of space. middle and upper class typical americans are if they walk around with privileged money snatching attitudes who dont stop and think about or help their average american citizens. i believe this apathy, and better than you materialistic attitude is one of the major downfalls of americans. (i think america is worse in this than some other areas of the world but certainly they arent the only ones)

but like zach was maybe hinting at, i believe the percentage of people out there who choose to do nothing to help themselves is very very very low. research in the field backs me up in this belief

Ok, I can agree with most of that.

What about people who know that they can receive money without doing anything and continually do so? Basically freeloaders. They have access to birth control yet pop out 7 kids, then refuse to get a job to feed them. What about them?

And, why are there people who are given chances and do things to better themselves but fail? Are you suggesting that there are people out to get them?

Anybody who has 7 kids to get more welfare is a fucking idiot. I don't remember what the exact figures are, but it's not that much.

Of course there are always going to be freeloaders. But overall, people want to work. What you do for a living is an important part of a person's identity.

welfare mommas is a fear of white people propagated by the media and bad politicians. the welfare system is so shitty it doesnt even really allow for this. so that isnt even really a concern for me. it falls back into the first issue. yes there are some bad people, but they still need/deserve help because they arent just cast off and out of society. they affect all of us therefore we need to do what we can to help. its the same freeloading question. not as many exist as a lot of people think.

everyone fails. its a part of life. because someone fails once, twice, three times, again thats not a reason to just cast them off. i can only speak from a social services perspective because thats in the manner i think so, there are a million different ways to interact and help people. maybe one approach just isnt as successful and it takes a few times to really get to someone and maybe it takes a few times to find the right housing, grant, home, medical center etc. for someone.

as far as are there people out there with the intention to to "get them." no i dont think so necessarily. but i think the political and social climate we live in now can be argued as doing so.

oh alex just because we arent talking about sending minorities and immigrants to death camps doesnt mean this thread is now shit!

Stephan's making a valid point. I try to help my students, but so many of them just don't care. I almost bit my tongue off last week while trying to hold it from bitching out one of my prego students. She refuses to do the class project of finding a job, any job through any means necessary then telling the class a little about it. Why? "I don't need a job." "How will you take care of your baby?" "There's government programs that help me with that." Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Going to sleep so I can enjoy a wonderful day at school tomorrow...

Just reposting this, as I thought it was a pretty interesting article on the topic (thought maybe some people missed it since the 2nd page went so fast):

Pretty fun article:
Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age!

Last month, Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, shrugged off manmade climate change as "a drop in the bucket." Showing that solar activity has entered an inactive phase, Prof. Sorokhtin advised people to "stock up on fur coats."

He is not alone. Kenneth Tapping of our own National Research Council, who oversees a giant radio telescope focused on the sun, is convinced we are in for a long period of severely cold weather if sunspot activity does not pick up soon.

shes also a child though... and pregnant. think what her family life is likely like. and the realization will hit her soon enough that there arent actually government programs to help her with much.

Well, I'm personally going to hoard as much money as I can, while raping the poor, polluting the environment, and womanizing as many women as I can in life.

I just need to get a personality transplant for the latter.

I don't give a shit if you read it or not. I thought it was interesting and it pertained to the topic. I also thought it was pretty funny, hence my use of the "laughing" icon. Sounds to me like you're guilty of the same thing you always accuse others of, not being open to all ideas.

more fun:
http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Monit...rticle10866.htm
QUOTE
Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.

No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out nearly all the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.

I wonder how long it will be before Al Gore jumps all over this as "his initiatives are succeeding" or something to that effect.

I wonder how log it will be before global warming doubters will jump all over this as evidence that global warming is a fake.

Oh wait. I'm too late. smile.gif
