i like how conservatives, especially people on this board, just call you retarded if they dont agree. even though you have decades of research on your side

so you dont believe a single person can make a difference? in many instances i agree but does that mean one should just go "oh shit oh well ill just totally forget my values and do whatever the hell i want!". if at least 1 person didnt believe strongly in something and move towards that goal nothing would ever get done.

Cathryn, I'm considering the purchase of a hybrid (Honda Civic) not because I give a rat's ass about global warming (which is only THEORETICALLY caused by harm to the environment) but because of my pocketbook.

Yes, I care about the environment, but I care in that I don't litter, dump shit into rivers, etc. I will use aerosol hairspray and use gas powered vehicles though.

Most people just can't afford gas. That's the bottom line.

the whole global warming fad is finally starting to die down...

the arctic and the antarctic ice shelves are growing which suggests we're going towards a cold cycle...completely opposite of all the doucheheads who say we're damaging the atmosphere and warming the earth

there's no doubt that pollution is at an all time high but i want to make it clear that global warming is not occurring

why is that even an argument? NO ONE knows the reason every person purchases a hybrid vehicle. but i do know the people i post with on prius forums believe in global warming, give a shit etc. whether that came before owning a hybrid or not i dont know

once again its normal for the ice sheets to grow IN THE WINTER TIME. alex sorry dude but you cant make it clear that global warming is not occuring

I don't recall calling anyone retarded. Just asked what you'd think if the research started showing a trend towards cooling.

Yes I do believe a single person/small group can make a difference, but not in the sense that you're thinking. The person that makes the difference is the one that comes up w/the device where you throw garbage in it and it produces clean electricity for your home and vehicle.

Naw you don't have to give up your beliefs. Just accept the fact that not everyone will share them, or be as motivated in them given that it really is impossible for one person to make a difference.

All you have to do is look at advertising. Sure they will mention "clean running", "environmentally safe", etc in their ads, but the ones you see have the giant
45/55 mpg
or the ads talking about passing up gas stations, other brand's vehicle out of gas so they pick them up, etc etc.

While I agree you can't use that to determine the whole global climate, it's not winter time, it's spring. And the global warming pundits (including yourself) have been using the glacier arguments for the past several years. You can't come back and start qualifying when it's ok to use that argument when you've already used it yourself.

man you guys world views are depressing me!

the ice sheets are not growing now. what alex is referring to i am assuming is the stories breaking out early this year. they were already disqualified, in the winter time

Well the treehugger world views of global doom due to our growth as a civilization depress me...

He didn't specify what story he was referring to though. I do recall posting one not too long ago talking about the ice coming back. And saw one on the news the other night talking about it.

this is going to get long because im going to have to explain global warming again.

the ice sheets are not growing. when the story of "east antarctic ice sheets growing GLOBAL WARMING FRAUD" came out people got up in arms... for a little bit. before scientists explained that the media grabbed a little bit of a study and ran with it.

that is a regional phenomenon. global warming considers all evidence on a global scale. therefore one part of an ice sheet spreading while the other parts shrinks is not evidence. scientists have to consider the mass balance of the evidence.

as far as that particular area - theres very little data about it and the data that created that humdrum has got some big flaws of its own. and current research by NASAs ongoing Grace experiment show a mass loss of ice in the region.

ice sheet thickening is not inconsistent with global warming. ive explained it in the past. global warming doesnt just mean "its gonna be hella hot!" it means a general global increase in temperatures with changes in global precipitation and weather patterns. warmer climates tend to more precipitation. the antartic is the most extreme desert on the planet. as it warms youd expect more snow. but its still like -50 degrees there. so a huge warming would still be below freezing thus still snow and freezing. thats why a large portion of climate change research is done in Greenland where conditions to study weather change is just better.

on to greenland... for some of the same reasons as stated above, greenlands ice sheet is growing in the center. but on the whole losing approximately 200 km3 of ice annually, doubled from just a decade ago. this is a huge amount compared to changes in the antarctic

and when taking into account ice shelves and freezing/melting you have to take into account the rise in sea temperature. does anyone not believe in that? because its been proven. trying to disagree with that is like disagreeing with the existence of gravity. think about how the global rise in sea temperature is going to affect an ice shelf. think about how it affects weather as a whole! hurricanes are formed in warm water. actually you need warm water to form a hurricane. a lot of people who do this kind of research say the sea temp. rise is a big reason for the increase in severity of storms and the appearance of severe weather where typically you dont get much

and believing in global warming isnt any more gloomy then people believing they need to own a gun for their own safety. because believing in it is not an end all be all. its not oh well time to die! its ok this is whats happening, lets help people understand it and find a way to improve the situation for a brighter future

ill post some of my sources again. go pick up a copy of the IPCC and read it. lots of parts are available in PDF online and you can get plenty of summaries about it. i own it if you want me to requote direct parts of it i will. its set up really user friendly actually.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/...70327122328.htm heres an article breaking down the information from NASA's GRACE studies. you can visit the GRACE site itself. UT's online collection of published papers have a whole hell of a lot to do with the GRACE program as they are one of the sponsors.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...1302753_pf.html heres a quick link to an article about more current (2008) results of GRACE if you dont want to look at the NASA site itself - it isnt user friendly

Cat to be honest, I read the first sentence and that's it. You don't need to explain global warming to anyone here. We all know what the theory is. We all know that you feel you have the pulse of the entire scientific community and that you are practically a world renowned climatologist. We also know that you think we are idiots because we don't necessarily believe that mankind has set into motion the doom of the planet by inventing the internal combustion engine. So seriously, the long winded posts of you blabbing about scientific bullshit you know nothing about are getting annoying. Sit back and just accept that this is something you cannot possibly completely understand (since nobody really does), and that you could, in fact, be wrong. I am the "know it all" on here supposedly and even I accept that I could be wrong. Trying to make yourself sound like some damn scientific genius doesn't make you sound like any more of an expert.

The global climate is just something we observe. Not something we really participate in. I guess some people have banked on making an industry out of an observation. I guess I really am the dumb one and al gore is the smart one in that respect, for not thinking of it sooner.

i consider myself one of the "in the know environmentalist" never said i was an expert. and if you arent even going to take the time to read parts of what i said then why even continue in this thread? just to make personal attacks?

shouldnt a thread about global warming BE about global warming? and if people dont want to read about global warming research or discuss it then let this thread die !

im not just pulling this stuff out of my butt - ive posted those sources and more in the past and i can post more if you want something specific?

How could you possibly think this??

So nothing we could/can/will do as a 6 billion+ population can affect the global climate?

Oh I dunno, because maybe there's like eleventy billion million zillion gagillion more animals than just humans, and they've been here for hundreds of millions of years longer than us, and they haven't blown up the planet yet?
