Just thought this was a pretty good description in layman's terms of what ZFS is and what it means for you.

it's hard to take that article seriously with statements like this:
QUOTE
For all of Microsoft’s fine talk about innovation they don’t do squat unless someone else does it first.

Yeah, and Apple is now claiming ZFS? Something designed by Sun several years ago?

and this:
QUOTE
ZFS implements very fast RAID that fixes the performance knock-off against software RAID. In ZFS all writes are the fastest kind: full stripe writes. And the RAID is running on the fastest processor in your system (your Mac), rather than some 3-5 year old microcontroller.

This has got to be a joke. Software RAID will never outperform hardware based.

Don't get me wrong, sounds like a neat idea for a competitor with windows home server (which has already been out for a year). But a replacement for some business' windows based server rack, no way.

Didn't we have a thread about this before? It wouldn't let me search it bc it's only 3 characters.

I agree that the Microsoft and GM bashing really take away from the article.

Software is never going to perform as well as dedicated hardware assuming that they both use the same algorithm. What the article states isn't necessarily wrong. It's grossly oversimplified.

RAID-Z does perform better than RAID 5 because each block on the file-system gets its own block avoiding partial block writes. If you were to implement that algorithm in hardware rather than software, it would probably be even faster.

I don't really see what you're getting at. The article discusses ZFS in a consumer level workstation not a high-end server or a home server (although I would imagine it will go in Apple's servers). Besides that, ZFS is a file system. A windows server rack is a physical object. I don't understand how you could propose to replace a windows server rack with a file system.

I'm not being critical with you on this point. I'm just saying that I genuinely don't understand what you're saying. smile.gif

Dunno. I just posted it in Apple asdf because it was interesting.

Yeah, I can understand these complaints. I kinda started to want an iPhone for a while, but now I'm glad I have stayed away.

Eh they wouldn't even really need to be using the same algorithm. Obviously software does eventually catch up (think back to when you had to have a hardware MPEG decoder card to play back a DVD with decent quality), but the hardware also continues to get better, and IMHO will always stay ahead of the software. Notice even the article mentions:
QUOTE

Yeah, how about a 1-3 year old one? wink.gif

I don't really see how the article isn't talking about high-end servers when it discusses replacing RAID cards & controllers (something typically only in high-end servers) or "Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard" (which when you click on the link takes you here, showing "connecting your business" and a 1U rackmount server.

And I just think you misunderstand what WHS is. Windows Home Server is essentially a new file system and OS from Microsoft. It's end result is essentially what this ZFS is doing. That's why I mentioned they could be good competitors.
