I don't know. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo don't seem to be having any problems finding developers for their proprietary shit. Microsoft has no problems with people writing games for their consoles because they're all directx based, which developers are familiar with and have been writing for over 10 years. DirectX is by no means proprietary anymore (in the development sense anyhow). And actually Sony has hit some stumbling blocks on developers not wanting to port certain games over to the PS3 because of the new cell processor language knowledge required. Although supposedly Sony is trying to develop some intermediary libraries to ease that. And Nintendo... don't even get me started on them... all you have to do is look at that massive library of games for the Wii to tell how much programmers love working on it... |

You've actually just proven the opposite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of...GL_and_Direct3D QUOTE Direct3D is a proprietary API designed by Microsoft Corporation for hardware 3D acceleration on the Windows platform. OpenGL is an open standard API that provides a number of functions for the rendering of 2D and 3D graphics and is available on most modern operating systems. OpenGL and Direct3D are both implemented in the display driver. DirectX is a proprietary system in that it's owned by microsoft and is closed source. As you point out, Apple is hurting because nobody programs in OpenGL, which is an open system. That's not to say that that is the correct idea, but if OpenGL is what's hurting Apple, then the reason why there aren't many Apple games isn't because of Apple's propriety. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! You've actually just proven the opposite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of...GL_and_Direct3D I never said OpenGL was proprietary. I just said nobody programs in it anymore. Apple's operating system is what I was referring to as far as being proprietary. DirectX is a proprietary system in that it's owned by microsoft and is closed source. As you point out, Apple is hurting because nobody programs in OpenGL, which is an open system. I never said DirectX wasn't proprietary. I said "in a development sense" it is not. You can download the SDK for free and develop whatever you want. That's not to say that that is the correct idea, but if OpenGL is what's hurting Apple, then the reason why there aren't many Apple games isn't because of Apple's propriety. OpenGL hurts Apple because nobody programs in it anymore. Apple's proprietary OS development also hurts them. I'm pretty sure this is exactly what I said before you went wiki hunting to try to disprove me or something. One other thing to add in, is that Apple's audience really aren't gamers anyways. Gamers tend to use PCs or already have other consoles. From a marketing standpoint the thing would probably be a flop. |

I stand corrected then. I forgot they went to a linux based w/the new one. But it's been that way all of what, 1 year or so? (with the newest OS). I also don't see anywhere I can download a fully compiled Apple OS for free.
Besides, The point is, game companies don't develop many games for Apple's OS. Even when they do, they will tend to have issues. It would be a slow road in to start for a new Apple console to get a decent library of games. |

I also don't see anywhere I can download a fully compiled Apple OS for free. It's BSD/Mach based. The kernel is open source, but there are parts of OS X that are still closed source (like the windowing manager). There are some open source operating systems based on the Darwin kernel though (like GNU Darwin. (and the Darwin kernel's been open source since the migration from OS 9 to OS X) At any rate, I think the basis of your argument was that Microsoft's gaming APIs are better than Apple's and I won't disagree with you on that one. I also agree with Spec, and I think Apple's smart enough to realize that. Maybe this means more gaming support for the iPhone and iPod Touch? Or maybe Apple's just decided to get their thumb out of their ass when it comes to gaming? I think Apple could make one hell of a gaming rig if they put their mind to it... Or it could just be nothing. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! Or it could just be nothing. This. They probably just wanted to copyright a few things for future use is all. Although I will admit that watching copyright applications is a great way to find out about new products. I know people saw Blizzard claim the name "Wrath of the Lich King" (new expansion to World of Warcraft) over a year ago, at least six months or so before they officially announced it. |

The update did jack-diddly-shit for my network problems. But after futzing with my keychain settings for a while, a new system keychain entry for my home network magically appeared, fixing everything. Well, for this network. We'll see how it does with my boyfriend's. Needless to say, I made a backup of the new keychain.

Apple doesn't plan on entering the gaming business -- they're looking at the portable gaming business. iPod and iPhone games.
Fact of the day: Microsoft's Xbox was originally going to be named the DirectXbox. It was shortened to Xbox, but the idea of a DirectX-based console prevailed. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

ZOMG! Apparently tech actually made an instructions page for connecting to TTUnet via Leopard.
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/helpcentral/gener...ess_leopard.php Too bad it wasn't any help... QUOTE NOTE: You may have to turn your AirPort card ON and OFF multiple times until the secured TTUnet appears. That's what I've been having to do. Although it does seem to be working better since I deleted the login keychain and then the preferred network and then readded the login keychain and the wireless network. But tech's wireless problems with my macbook are really intermittent. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome!
