In the wake of the whole Tom Cruise being crazy and South Park recent events, I've been looking to Scientology a lot. This "religion" totally intrigues me. Since I haven't seen much Religion in the NPR, I thought I would start a thread for discussion on this. So discuss.

Well, Scientology has some interesting (and not terribly far-fetched) introductory ideas. It's when they start getting into the idea that humans were brought to Earth by aliens that I have problems with it all...

QUOTE
The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of."

Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The Scientology religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:

Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized — and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.

In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.

Through Scientology, people all over the world are achieving the long-sought goal of true spiritual release and freedom.

Based on that description, it sounds very Gnostic.

I heard somewhere that L. Ron Hubbard started Scientology on a bet that he could scam a bunch of people into buying into a religion.

yeah, 75 million years ago an Alien named Xenu went around the galaxy gathering up the overpopulation from other planets and froze them (think Han Solo). He dropped them all around volcanos in the pacific and Hawaii and used H-bombs to blow them up. The souls of the aliens were trapped on earth until man evolved, then the alien souls (Thetans) entered our bodies. Any time you have a bad thought or anything like that it is the Theta in your body giving you trouble. These Thetans leave you when you die and enter another body, so it's like reincarnation. They do something called "auditing" which is finding out what your Thetan has done in past lives that is giving you trouble in your present life. By realizing what these problems are and learning to adapt to them, you become an "operating Thetan" which means that you are in touch enough that you will become immune to disease, bad thoughts, all that nasty stuff. And yes, Psyko is right, they make you pay for EVERYTHING. It's basically a scam to make money and they are a religion for tax breaks.

I recommend looking at the wikipedia entries for "Scientology" and "L. Ron Hubbard"

"Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way to do it would be start his own religion." ~ L. Ron Hubbard As quoted in the Los Angeles Times (27 August 1978)

EDIT- supposedly he was quoted as saying this in 1944, but the quote wasn't public until 1978 and reader's digest published it as well in 1980.

Moral of the story

If you want to start up a religion and take peoples money, Don't talk about it.

--------------------
A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

Oh yeah, I forgot about the historical records we have of Jesus's existence. Whoops! Atleast we have proof of the DC-8 jets that Xenu flew.
