well i'm not really referring to some dude in NY who has to make $8/mo so he can keep is 200 sq ft apartment. i'm talking about states having to compete for minimum wages, companies which rely on minimum wage workers having their costs skyrocket, and companies who aren't location dependent picking up and moving so they get cheaper labor. there's a lot to think about besides just the "well it costs more to live here so i should make more in my bottom of the barrel, non motivated to do anything better with my life" job.

I was under the impression that many liberals believe that the minimum wage doesn't really benefit the poor. It really only benefits middle class high school kids.

I was a min. wage middle class highschool kid and had plenty of cash to blow on car, gas, ganj... your theory seems sound. I obviously didn't NEED the wage to survive, but if there was an increase, that meant I had more to spend on a new skate deck... however, I hate socialism in most any form. I do not think we need to "fix" our system to help lower income people make more money "just cuz". education, putting a fuckin leash on the rampant raping of welfare...these things will help people motivate themselves. you start socializing everything and you're gonna end up with a huge separation of wealth (see: nicaragua). has our society ever been this bad? have we ever had this many social services? anyone see a correlation there? |

I'm not sure socialist believe in raising the minimum wage. Having a minimum wage at $5.85 will not help that single mother raising two kids. Social services do however believe in educating the lower income people so they can find a job that will actually pay the bills and help them out of poverty. So in essence, I don't really get who thinks that raising the minimum wage would be beneficial to the poor people

Education is not the miracle cure everyone makes it out to be, but whatever. It pays my bills. in order for a child to be educated, they have to have the desire and motivation to do so. i don't see any poverty stricken people with much ambition in my line of work, but then again, i prolly only deal with the bad apples. i agree with cupcake. people are too pussyfied. they need to learn to deal with their issues and stop depending on other people. you fucked up all your life? you deserve to be a broke ass min. wage fry cook. effort is rewarded. it requires effort and modivation to succeed. -------------------- |

Did you know the prevalent (sp? right word?) philosophy of many teachers is that we're not here to teach the material but to motivate the students to learn. Mind boggling!

minimum wage out here in California is already higher than the national minimum wage, i dont see any mass chaos happening I just think there'd end up being a slow separation into slum states vs rich states. Non location based businesses that rely on low wage jobs would flock to the states with the lowest minimum wage, leaving richer states with a smaller low wage work force, which continue to increase their minimum wage, raise prices of common goods/services, and turn into a vicious cycle. besides, california for all intents and purposes has the same minimum wage as the national average. it's about 50% more, but it also costs that much more to live there. |

If you keep increasing minimum wage across the board at the national level you are eventually get hurt the rural midwestern/north states. These people can easily live off of lower wages since life is simpler and everytime you raise the minimum wages it makes it harder for the towns that are a majority of mom and pop businesses. I'm not saying that this increase is gonna cause problems but if you make a habit of it there are gonna start being problems. |
