That is a little creepy.

It's cool that they're developing this technology...but I think the way people game today they would burn themselves out or actually hurt themselves using this thing.

well it's just reading your brain activity so I doubt that's a real possibility.
the cool part I think about is my good friend who has had cerebral palsey his whole life and never could really play any fast action games very well. |

but how would your head hurt from using this? does your head hurt when you press buttons on the keyboard? all this is doing is reading those impulses.

but how would your head hurt from using this? does your head hurt when you press buttons on the keyboard? all this is doing is reading those impulses. games today are extremely interactive if they're talking about integrating this technology into something like that...kid's heads are going to explode from all the impulses their gonna have to put out -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. i don't think you guys understand what the thing does.
say i'm playing a game, and pressing the 'R' key reloads my gun. here's how it goes: 1. I think, man I need to reload my gun 2. My brain says, well if I want to reload the gun, I need to press 'R' 3. My brain decides the best way to do that is to lift my left index finger and move it forward and to the right, then press down. 4. The impulse to do this then gets sent. what this thing does is cut out steps 3 and 4. it sense that brain activity that says "hey I want to press the 'R' key". so you're not doing any more thinking than you did before. now granted, if games ended up being completely run by this thing, people could start to lose their hand/eye coordination they've gained by playing these games, but people wouldn't be having strokes or aneurisms (sp?). edit: oh and they're not just talking about using this kinda technology... read the whole article. they're saying these things will be out to market possibly as early as christmas this year. |

I wonder if skill level of the user matters. I noticed they were using some girl that didn't seem very gamerish to me - big hoop earrings, look of confusion on her facial profile. So the brain activity would register differently for her than for someone that's played FPS since the early days. Those people don't really think like you described. They just do it.
Kind of like typing. When I type, I don't think out each individual letter. I think out words and sentences and my fingers just flow. But I know that my dad thinks out each letter when he types because I watch him hunting-and-pecking for each key (it is very annoying and he won't let me type for him either.). I'm sure they can work around that in the future if they aren't there yet, but I'm just curious if that's a problem at this time. -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?

well in the article it says they use what they call 'brain fingers'. i think what it means is, when you get it and you're setting it up, you'd define your brain fingers (up to 20 or so according to the article). so, say you were setting up a army game or something. you know how you can go into the control menu and you click "switch to grenade" and then you press the key you want for switching to grenades. well, instead, you'd click it, then think about switching to grenades, and a 'brain finger' would be set instead of a key. kinda like setting up external joysticks or game pads, where you specify hotkeys.
read the last two paragraphs of the first green section of the article and you'll see what i mean. |

Yeah, I understand that part. It's similar to how I have to set up my Nostromo n52 game pad, but I'm thinking it's going to work differently on a true gamer than it will on a novice. Unfortunately, at that price tag, it's too much for me to experiment and see if I'm right.
