you lived in amarillo? i lived there from 1982-1993 up there on the north-east side in the middle of all those laoatian gang wars. i completely understand about that "they/us" shit. not a fun place to grow up in. glad my father got us out of there before i was old enough to get caught up in it (left when i was 11) my 2 closest friends are doing life for murdering my next door nieghbor (well, one was stabbed and killed in prison) and i would have been in the middle of all that. fuck yeah I know that laotian gang shit you're talking about. that was the BAD side of town and we never really got involved there, except when we'd go skate all the empty pools on ama blvd and holy shit get it on! what we had going on was a working class punk vs. silver spoon prep thing not unlike the outsiders. the funny part is, most of the hardcores ended up being veterans, college grads, business owners, and successful in our own right. at the time though, it was a very uneven and cruel way to grow up. banding together and embracing your inner freak, and channeling that pain and hurt into aggression and skating where everyone pushes each other was a pretty rad outlet and seemed to be a healthy way to deal with petty teen angst BS. the downside is it got rolling so hard, that younger kids dug it and wanted to be like us (even when they may not have initially had the reason to be, since the mid 90's were much more accepting), so it propogated it's own bad tensions. I was in new york when my buddy called and said his little brother was killed in a fight with some preps. none of us ever imagined it would get that bad. I eat grapefruit for breakfast... but I don't think anyone particular cares right now. grapefruit kicks all ass. I should start eating that since it's the sweetness of fruit that bothers me. |

grapefruit sucks and is a poser fruit just because it is "dressed all fruity" but not necessarily taste fruity on the inside, doesn't mean it's a poser fruit... I am seeing some parallels between this and the previous discussion on emo/punk. -------------------- ![]() |

but in my mind people who use any sort of label to get anything out of it really is misusing it. being called whatever isnt suppose to be a personal advantage. yeah you get an understanding, sometimes part of a social group but when it is perverted to get money, chicks/dudes, attention for attentions sake etc than what is that?
and at the same time someone who uses a label/ideal/belief to outcast themself isnt getting it either -------------------- Little monkeys making money

Im from El Paso, putas. Ill bust a Mexican cap in you azzzzz.... homies but yeah, Amarillo is pretty damn ghetto. My best friend lives in Pampa which is 30 minutes north of there. Amarillo is pretty scary. it's not too terribly bad, but far worse than you'd think. you have those laotians, the mexicans, the punks, the black gangs, then these weird rich kids who roll gansta style that used to not exist... punk in amarillo is the opposite of intolerance and racism, very s.h.a.r.p. the oddest partnership came in about 1990/91 when we started hanging out with the 8-ball posse, which is this meanass black gang. like house parties, halloween, cookouts in the summer...all because my buddy worked at JC Penny's with this cool black chick who was down with that gang. they got a kick out of us, and vice versa. that was a rad time in history. |
