J.J. Abrams, creator of Lost and Alias, is directing and producing. Apparently it will be a complete re-boot of the franchise, a la Batman Begins and Superman Returns.

For the part of Kirk's Vulcan first officer Mr. Spock, IGN has been told that none other than Oscar winner Adrien Brody (King Kong, The Pianist) is in talks with Paramount to play the role. If cast, Brody would succeed Leonard Nimoy in a role that forever marked Nimoy's career. But with a Best Actor award already under his belt and an eclectic mix of films on his resume, Brody wouldn't have as much to lose by taking on the iconic role as Nimoy had. IGN has also been told that Oscar nominee Gary Sinise -- currently seen on the small screen in CSI: NY -- is in talks for the role of Dr. McCoy, the ornery and politically incorrect ship's physician aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. McCoy's prickly relationship with Spock was the basis of much of the humor and humanity of the original 1960s series. The late DeForrest Kelley played "Bones" on TV. |

Paramount's Chairman and CEO was quoted in the press release, saying that "the revival of the Star Trek franchise is an important part of Paramount’s turnaround."
Considering how much money the franchise has made over the years, it really shouldn't come as a shock that Paramount is going back to the well. A Salon article in 1999 estimated that the Star Trek franchise had, up to that point, generated $2.3 billion in TV revenues, over $1 billion in movie revenues and $4 billion in revenues from merchandise. |

Reboot and remake are different things.
The term "reboot" typically only applies to stories/franchises with established continuity - this continuity does not have to be film-based. A good example of this would be Batman (1989) and Batman Begins (2005). The characters are the same, there are similar elements, but the stories are different and they begin a new continuity. Other examples of reboots are Superman Returns (2006), Casino Royale (2006) and Planet of the Apes (2001). Remakes, however, are usually a re-interpretation of a single, previously established, story. A good example of this would be Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Ocean's Eleven (1960), or King Kong (2005) and King Kong (1933). |

I suppose if they are going to cast someone as Captain Kirk, Matt Damon isn't a bad choice. I'll reserve judgement on this movie until I see it.

The one thing you have to understand....even though it's a "reboot" of the saga..it's been played out. Audiences have been burned with all the TNG movies they spewed on us that pretty much caused the franchise to stall. Oh yeah....can't fail to mention the new series that makes absolutely no sense. Pre captain kirk? WITH LCD SCREENS and touch controls? Yeah...an amazing leap they made to talking computers and flip switches.

1 exception: Star Trek: First Contact fucking ROCKED.
As far as the touchscreens and shit goes, there was an episode of Enterprise where the mirror universe crew (on which the entire 2-part episode centered -- no good universe crew at all) encountered a constitution class ship from the (good) future -- dorky controls and all. They eventually even changed into the classic TOS uniforms. It was an incredible homage, and they basically made the "less advanced" controls canonically more advanced. Really cool episode, one of the last of the 4th season, and proof that ENT had finally started to get it right, RIGHT before they were canned :/ -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

First Contact was a good movie. I liked Generations just a little bit more.
