I have substituted at a school that did this. Kids get to talk more during class then they do during lunch. I remember when I was a kid, we didnt eat in a cafeteria. We ate outside, and when we were done eating (some of us wouldnt eat at all) we would play basketball and other sports. No wonder kids are fat. PE is social hour and lunch is sit, eat, be quiet, and get fat.

first of all, its a school.
second of all, its a very reliviously oriented school. something like thats tells me - not public. so basically they can change the rules however the powers at be see fit. if you started a private school you could dictate that 2pm to 3pm was silent meditation time and have each of the teachers walking around swatting people that fall asleep. -------------------- 32-bit whore

If you are going to shut kids up, at least cut out their vocal cords. They don't deserve the privileges of adult tax paying citizens. 9 times out of ten, they don't have anything useful to say anyways. Dictating silent times only breeds possible disobedience. If you take away their ability to break the rules, then you solve all the problems you had in mind.

I went to a strict Baptist school from grades preschool until 9th grade (went to a less strict one after that) and I can say that having strict rules did absolutely nothing for the kids. I am the only girl I know from my class that doesnt have kids. I would venture to say that kids need a balance of structure and tolerance in their lives. If you stifle them too much, they will just rebel. On the other hand, they will also be little brats if they are allowed too much freedom. Talking should be allowed. Freedom of expression is of utmost importance for children.
