I will be totally honest, I don't do a great deal. My car is a Honda civic, which by it's very nature gets good gas mileage so I guess that helps. I usually leave the lights off in my apartment because I have a skylight. At night I relax with some candles and the ambient glow of my computer screen. I have also been keeping my gas usage down as much as possible. I think that it is important for citizens to do whatever they can, but corporations and government entities need to organize and bear the brunt of the responsibilities (after all, corporations are people too).

Proliferation of nuclear power is a very bad idea. While Nuclear power is less pollutant than greenhouse gases, when a nuclear power plant melts down it is great fun. You may be saying that there have not been many serious failures, but as current plants continue to age and more are created the incidence of serious catastrophes will increase. Also, the toxic waste which is produced by nuclear power plants takes MILLIONS of years to break down. There is not an easy solution to this problem...

yeah there is. theres lots of support for nuclear power in america professionally.

first nuclear power is HIGHLY safer than it used to be. 3 mile island let out 15 curries. you get 500 in a common xray. chernobyl happened because the soviets did not know what they are doing. yes the plants now are old and would need to be redone. nuclear power is safe and highly effective. the only worry is terrorism.
also most nuclear waste are items like gloves and coats (i forget the technical name for this kind of waste). these are barely if at all radioactive but the government treats them like WMD's and guess what these deposits are all over the place a whole lot in texas

we're talking world wide cathryn, not just america. just because we are ready to go nuclear doesn't mean everyone else is. and the soviets don't know what they are doing.... lets just for a second assume that no terrorism will come from giving the middle east nuclear power.... you think another chernobyl WON'T happen when some of the best skills those people have to offer to the workforce is the ability to parallel-park a camel?


and the waste becomes a much bigger deal when

1. it's worldwide
2. most countries don't have as strict a protocol with dealing with waste like america.

The fact that the rest of the world might be incompetent shouldn't stop us from turning to nuclear power here. I think Europe and east Asia would do just fine with it too, imho.

In the US alone, the DOE acknowledges that there are "millions of gallons of radioactive waste" as well as "thousands of tons of spent nuclear fuel and material" and also "huge" quantities of contaminated soil and water. The Fernald site in Florida for example had "31 million pounds of uranium product", "2.5 billion pounds of waste", "2.75 million cubic yards of contaminated soil and debris", and a "223 acre portion of the underlying Great Miami Aquifer had uranium levels above drinking standards".

like i said most "radioactive waste" is not actually what most people think of. its not glowing bars of metals and other elements. the majority of nuclear waste are things like gloves, aprons, labcoats, exterior containment metals

Sure, there are still barrels of liquid toxic waste though. I am not disagreeing with you, but your post seemed to downplay nuclear waste. I am just clarifying that it is still a MAJOR problem.

i dont think its such a major problem. i think nuclear power would greatly outweigh the risks which i still consider miniscule. theres only so much radiation a glove gives off even for the amount of waste they have

but i do agree nuclear power may not be feasible now because for all the people around the world that hate us, blowing up a brand new nuclear reactor would be a good idea. and i dont trust the government to properly know how to protect against something like that.

I think that we need to look into other methods of power which will not threaten our security or the environment. Not like that is going to ever happen.

we have looked into other forms of power, except most are not cost efficient enough

they might be putting wind farms out into the gulf sometime soon
