I recently had this question come up and thought it'd be an interesting poll to post on here. I know most people would probably say they'd be the "good samaritan" and tell them, but the prospect of free items at the mistake of a checker who works for a multi-billion dollar retailer is something to think about too.

one note though: i wouldn't do this at a frys, or a best buy. They check your bag and reciept, and would more likely than not accuse you of trying to steal it.

If the guy gave me incorrect change, i'd tell him. If the corp gets screwed, then I don't care.

if it was the cashier's fault - if they accidenally rang up 2 items instead of three, i'd let them know. that probably comes out of their paycheck
if it was scanned incorrectly - example i bought a box of candy and i was only charged for one package - fuck em. i have no problem ripping off greedy corporations -------------------- only here to talk sports occationally

good times... that you should mention best buy...
I've never been searched by the courtesy clerk or whoever that dork is at the front. ever. recently bought a sony handicam and a nintendo DS and walked right the hell out. it's all a game. you're gonna think I am an idiot, or a dick, but I make it a point to not stop, not look like you'd want to bother me, not look like everyone always does (all lost and shit), not look like a criminal, when I'm leaving. it's not that I am stealing and don't want to get caught, it's just that I don't feel like dealing with that idiot. so I don't. it's a game I have. however: DO NOT try this at Sam's...those old retired bastards probably fought on guadal canal or some shit and you will not get through their lines without answering to them. I also try this with bouncers or doormen, and I bet I've pulled it off (going to front of line and not paying cover/getting carded) probably 5 times in my life? experience has shown me more door guys are much more confrontational and have more confidence than the best buy guy. one time I got by one, then about 10 minutes later he comes up to the bar and politely asks me if I forgot to pay cover and I'm all 'shit sorry man' and pay him there out of respect for him. it's like for 10 minutes he sat there and contemplated coming up to me...like he may have wondered "is that guy the owner's brother? a cop? a gangster? reporter?" shit you never know...but I give him major props for saying fuck it, and getting the cover. take someone offguard for a split second and you'd be amazed at what you can pull off. it's not a jedi mind trick, it's just people's own personal insecurities and hesitations about getting wrapped up in something they are deep down cautious and perhaps scared of. which is confrontation. try it everytime you go to those places that check your receipt. thousand yard stare. dont make eye contact, look through their skull as if they are in your line of sight and they dont exist. dont be meek, and dont keep your gaze on them for more than a fleeting instant. the worst that could happen is you have to show them your receipt. the best that can happen is you mindfucked someone and the more you do it, the more confidence you have (and the more confident you are, the better you are at pulling it off). thus ends my neurotic, rambling lesson of the day... |

I would inform the checker that they'd forgotten to ring up one of the items. Now if I'm in a situation where a cashier or whomever has repeatedly fucked up my order/sale, THEN I won't have any qualms about taking the free item.

In this specific scenario, I just play it cool, pay, and get outta there.
I've had people screw things up before and I corrected them so I could pay the proper (full price, not a convenient "discount"), but only when I would personally feel bad for it. For instance, I've had repeated checkouts getting some breakfast where this bitch with glaucoma problems (she's gotta be early 20s btw) doesn't see everything right in front of her. I feel bad rippin somebody off that can't help it. But then again, why is she a fuckin cashier !? Trials and tribulations. I'm the the 'cake though, just play it cool and its amazing what you can get away with. I had a few instances of getting into bars when I wasn't 21 yet, flashing my real ID that said I was 20 and just putting my arm out expecting a band. -------------------- QUOTE (Lance) now we have some dude from argentina wondering how to fuck dogmeat |

Generally i wouldn't see a need to be dishonest (just my personal moral for myself) and i would most likely tell them. But i wouldn't really see anything wrong with someone not telling for something like clothing. One can usually tell when it would be "wrong" and i don't really see it in this situation.

I have no problem ripping off a company (any company for that matter) as long as the employee does not suffer because of it.
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?
