not really. it's the lonliest and angriest you'll ever feel.

it's hard to describe, but at least there you have all these other guys who know what you've seen and done and your unit is your family. you get used to the rush of it too...and you find yourself needing something to occupy your time from getting bored. alcohol is a big thing many (myself included) turn to for a variety of reasons.

what happens is...you come home and you grow irritated with people who treat you the same. because you are not the same person. you start harboring resentment for them and thinking they're blind idiots. I mean everyone, from your mom to the starbucks chick. that makes you feel alone and like an outcast.

luckily I've already been through that deal and am back to being a lazy civilian who thinks a bad day is when the tivo didn't record my program..so I can walk him through it and he won't feel so alone and he can confide in me fucked up shit that others wouldn't want to hear...or maybe he doesn't want them to look at him funny. he asked when on leave, "when am I going to start feeling bad for killing?"...I don't have an answer because I never felt remorse, but that's the kind of thing I doubt he would ask some fellow trader at lunch.

PTSD is oftentimes a cop-out for pussies who can't hack or want to be babied. but whatever that isolation/irritation homecoming mindfuck feeling is called...that thing is no bullshit.

A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

this whole war has kind of thrown marines into a situation we aren't used to...that of an occupying force.

marines are forward operating and the last people you want as a policeman is a jarhead who's known nothing but shoot and move and is now asked to be ultra selective about engagements. the marine GCE works best in situations like fallujah where we say "ok, you have til this time to leave, anyone around after that is fair game".

I think the mission in a-stan would be a better allocation of strengths.

Andrew Olmstead was the first casualty of 2008.

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008...vastating-news/

He blogged about the war, politics, etc. here: http://andrewolmsted.com/

I'm still trying to figure out how a major and a captain get ambushed.

Where's the daily death toll counts now? Oh that's right we don't hear about the Iraq war on the news anymore because people aren't dying every day. F'n media.
