so it looks as if the city council has successfully annexed the strip.
This basically means they can still sell alcohol since they are grandfathered in but now prices are going to increase 1.5% for the city sales tax. Alcohol still cant be sold in the rest of the city. QUOTE Council approves annexation of 'The Strip'
BY JAMES GALLAGHER AVALANCHE-JOURNAL The city of Lubbock is now wet, though hopefully not too wet. The City Council finalized its annexation of "The Strip" on Tuesday and updated its irrigation ordinance to reduce waste from lawn watering. The council voted 5-1 to annex the row of package alcohol stores along the Tahoka Highway. Councilman Floyd Price voted against the annexation. Price has long criticized the plan as a money grab. The city estimates it will gain about $500,000 - equal to a half a cent on the property tax rate - in sales tax revenue through the annexation. The city will add 1.5 cents to the sales tax charged at The Strip, meaning area residents will have to pay 1.5 percent more for their beer, wine and liquor. For example, the addition to the sales tax means a $6.99 six-pack of beer will cost 10 cents more. Andy Burcham, the city's director of fiscal policy and strategic planning, said the sales taxes won't kick in until April 1, in accordance with state law. "They give them a little time to get ready ... change the computers and stuff," he said. |

I love how the writer of that article added "though hopefully not too wet."
Douchebag. Prohibition is simply legislating someone else's morality and preventing adults from making adult decisions. Not to mention the churches in this town are making a killing off of that monopoly. Fuck those corrupt bastards! -------------------- |

I have heard so many things on this issue that I really don't know what is the actual truth.
I've also heard that the owners of shit at The Strip (good ol Jimmy and co) make donations to groups to help keep them as the monopoly power. Then people said that those guys have already purchased a lot of land within city limits so that if they do ever turn Lubbock wet, they'll still be running the show... I have no idea what is true or not. I just know that I've thrown up after every meal the past 2 days. WICKED. -------------------- QUOTE (Lance) now we have some dude from argentina wondering how to fuck dogmeat |

They could buy all the land they want, but if/when the city becomes wet Wal-Mart and every convienence store in town will start selling (beer and wine, at least). Competition will take care of it from there.

This figures - Lubbock figures out a way to make buying beer, liquor and wine at the Strip even more expensive.

Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

All law legislates morality... Ok... there is general "for the moral good of the public" kind of general knowledge stuff (murder is bad, rape is bad, stealing is bad) then there is "religion X's morality" in law (sodomy is bad, sex toys are a sin, gambling is a sin, etc...) Yes, all law MAY come from some sort of morality, but I was leaning more towards the "sin" nature of the current law on the books regarding alcohol sales in Lubbock. -------------------- |

It is Lubbock realizing that there is money (and good money at that) to be made from the strip and that city services can do the area some good. Right now the Sheriff's office and volunteer fire departments handle all problems out that way...
I dunno, people (as in residents) vote for whether the city stays "package" dry or not. If Tech students actually resided in Lubbock and voted then we would probably see this whole thing going away. I live in Irving, which like Lubbock, allows by-the-drink sales in bars and restaurants but does not allow package sales anywhere in the city. Neither does Coppell, which is right up the street (and I'm sure there are others). This issue was on the ballot during the elections and it did not pass. The people who vote are making this decision, so do your part if you really want to see the change. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

drinking alcohol is not a sin Those who actually show up on election day say it is. Except in Wolforth. Remember that church that was heading up the opposition to that proposition? They were claiming it was a sin that will lead to further problems. -------------------- |

will lead to further problems. well, generally speaking, this is true but lubbock already has all the problems associated with alcohol abuse, so i seriously doubt crime will increase very much, if at all. it's not like we're introducing guns to the indians for the first time; people know the pros and cons of booze, and any logical person can see that it's ridiculous to not allow alcohol sales in a major metropolitan city. |

Unless you lump ALL moral decisions by people into "religious" decisions. |
