That 720,000 does not take into account that a good number of those are not combat ready troops (desk sitters if you will). Also, if a war was to start I can say almost without a doubt that China would be drawn in somehow. North Korea would be much more willing to fight than Iraq, turning the very mountainous terrain into a modern day Iwo Jima. That region has not forgotten Vietnam and how a seemingly renegade, guerilla army and militia defeated a super power simply by going underground. The training of our troops has changed as well. Draft would be the only neccasary means to fight the war. All I have to do i look at Vietnam for that. We all remember vietnam, thousands of US troops lost their lives and the country was bitterly divided. Invading north korea would not be a good idea at all.

the problems in iraq right now are suicide & car bombings. somehow i doubt that's how a war in NK would play out.
the funny thing is people say "well they learned from vietnam how to beat a superpower blah blah blah". it works both ways. there's no doubt in my mind we learned plenty from vietnam too. as far as i know (and i don't know much) of the vietnam war, there wasn't an immediate draft, there was a draft when tens of thousands of US soldiers needed to be replaced. |
