Ok, so I'm buying a new computer. I initially wanted to buy one of the new intel macs, but found that I could be literally getting twice the computer for the same price as one of the new intel iMacs. Thus I've decided on Alienware. My main question is which is better performance-wise:

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 930 withDual Core Technology

or

AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64 3200+ Processor

I'd go with a dual-core Athlon myself, but it's also been my experience that Alienware stuff is a little overpriced.

What system from them are you looking at getting and have you compared gaming machines from other manufacturers?

Well, the problem is that the AMD that comes on the system that I'm looking at isn't dual core. I also expected Alienware to be a bit overpriced, but they seem to be fairly reasonable compared to dell and gateway now (must be the dell buyout).

I'm looking at gettnig one of these two systems (albeit with a couple of modifications):

http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pa...ode=SKU-DEFAULT

or

http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Page...ode=SKU-DEFAULT

I'm leaning more towards the intel system though. Now that I've compared the two, it looks like the Intel is better performance-wise.

Also, I haven't really looked at any other manufacturers other than Dell and Gateway. Any suggestions?

The Pentium D will be good for multi tasking. Will run very fucking hot. I don't know what CPU cooler they will use but you may have to get a better cooler for it.
The AMD will be good for raw power on one application.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/
is an ok site for building a computer... they will swap out parts/ upgrade the parts you select which can be good and bad.

You going to want to SLI or CrossFire video card?

the dual core Intel chips are having some serious documented problems in macs and I have seen them having some problems running Adobe applications in pcs....

Go with AMD. I have heard amazing things about their dual core chips. Everyone at my work suggests them

The AMD's are looking better in this tech phase, lots of intel people are converting to AMD, but it may just be a trendy thing to do.

I'd personally go get an older system. My desktop is a xp 1500+ that is about 3 years old and took only around 350 to put together and still runs Rise of Nations and CS source ok.

Yeah. And I wish I could afford a dual core proc by AMD. But they don't make anything but the higher-end procs with dual cores.

Again, it's a problem of price. I wish I could afford that, but no tengo muy dinero.

Ok scratch that. I'm getting a hardon from this computer:

What's you price range?

Sorry you just need a mother board that can do SLI. With a SLI video card. You can just get the 2nd one later on. That was my plan.

Only thing is the video card will be a really crappy brand with only pasive cooling, like they gave me. You could save money if you already have monitors you can use.

intel duo core.
integrated bluetooth.
integrated 802.11b/g (integrated antennas are usually wired around the screen, usually around 7 dbi and better than a card.)
80gb or larger drive
1200x1600 or larger resolution
1gb or more ram

(these are laptop specs)

get those and whatever else and you should be fine. i'm not up on graphics cards, but it shouldn't be hard to find a good one.

dvdrw seems to be standard, but don't get caught without one.
