I saw an interview with this guy while he was in Iraq and the kids loved him. Not because he gave them chocolate but because he made sure they were taken care of. The fact that they are soldiers is what makes them inherently selfless. Yes, deep down, they may have reasons for being a soldier other than saving lives, etc. but because they are over there and they chose the life makes them selfless. It isn't you over there being shot at.

I agree with hartmann that soldiers are selfless and sacrificing a lot. I believe there's a lot of them in it for other reasons but if never before they know how dangerous it can be. I have a family member over there and am very proud of him.
I also agree with prefix bc I'm sick of seeing "_____ died today in Iraq" stories. The media doesn't air/print these stories because they care about the soldiers they do it because they're trying to tug the heartstrings and get people to take their side. I guarantee during Vietnam where tens of thousands died there wasnt a damn 5 min feature on the news about each dead soldier how he was the football team captain in high school. |

A bunch more garbage about how awesome he was, end of story. until you put your own personal life, freedom, and choices on the shelf you will never know how selfless and noble serving is. that said...serviceman can and have been reprobates...liars, rapists, murderers... but as shitty as they are, they have at least done one thing noble in their life. you might try to argue the merits of whether serving is noble or not...but they would be unbased...because of the nature of the word itself: "serving"...voluntarily...to protect you...period. do not ever confuse the calling of serving in the military with a political ideology (I think many uninitiated younger people do just that...and that is a farce). leaders change...the house changes...if one was to base serving their country on who was in office at the time, we would be royally fucked. but you have the right to be as tired of the stories as you want...for whatever reason you want. due to the efforts of the guy whom the story is about. |

(based mainly on politics...over which the vets, many drafted, did not control). and as a whole america felt terrible about it starting in the late 70's...guilt is a heavy burden and thus are trying to ensure that will never happen again in this "our vietnam". they will bash the president, cabinet, decision makers all day long (and should if they disagree with the decisions). but the vets are hands off. I think this is a good thing. overkill? perhaps...but better than the previous slant. |
