QUOTE (chook @ Jun 28 2006, 03:20 PM) I looked a little into the coal to liquids. please post some good info on it. My last post wasn't enough? It's fairly easy to find the pros of CTL and there really aren't many downsides. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

QUOTE (impala454 @ Jun 28 2006, 03:32 PM) well i think the support for ethanol is because it comes from a renewable resource (ie corn) How renewable is it when you have to burn thousands upon thousands of diesel fuel in farm equipment to bring it to market? I'm telling you all, this is a political stunt, nothing more. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

QUOTE (Hartmann @ Jun 28 2006, 03:55 PM) I don't know how many times I have to say it... 'Coal to Liquids is what this country should be investing in. China's realized its potential and the fact that it creates no pollution when burned, and even the pollution created during it's refinement can be used to pump oil out of wells. Clean, cheap, and a whole lot available... Uhhhhhh ... coal is the most filthy fuel on the planet....The reason it's so widley used is because it's dirt cheap ... How can you possibly make the claim there is no pollution by burning "liquid coal" ... what the hell is liquid coal? I've never even heard of it before.... -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

lololx0r
p.s. why not just convert the farm equipment to run on renewable energy then? think dogmeat, think! i know it's hard but <waterboy>you can do it!</waterboy> |

During the chemical reaction the coal becomes super clean, the only biproduct being CO2 which instead of being released into the atmosphere is pumped into the ground to get more oil out. It's already in practice with most of the major oil companies to revive "dead wells". Coal is only dirty if you burn it. In this case the sulphur is being completely stripped out along with just about every other "dirty" chemical. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

It isn't completely clean, but they use a scrubbing process that pulls out the rest of the pollutants. Everyone's main worry was that it would create a ton of CO2, which they have dealt with. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

There's enough CO2 in the ground already to cause a problem... Just look back at accounts of the eruption of Krakatoa. From what Shell has released about their plant that will be going in in China they will be using all of the CO2 in wells in Sakhalin and Siberia. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

But almost every hydrocarbon reaction that breaks bonds to produce energy has some form of CO2 form after combustion with oxygen. Ethanol produces CO2 and the NO and NO2 because of the abundance of N2 in the air. I believe, but haven't seen, that the diesel from the conversion would just be hydrocarbon chains. If they are able to clean more sulfer and mercury out of it than liquid pertrolium products, i would be totally for it. There just doesn't seem to be any place that has a shitload of info on all the alternative fuels out there. btw H2S will kill you in 25 ppm. I think the cleanest is the fuel cell because it does not use carbon's in the reaction, but these are too expensive to be practical at the moment. -------------------- Southern Rock, beer and bears!

QUOTE (impala454 @ Jun 28 2006, 04:49 PM) you gotta be kidding me... farm equipment pollution?? No, I'm not kidding you at all. Heavy equipment that is not used on government-owned roads (eg it burns the red diesel) such as farm and construction equipment are not bound by the same environmental regulations that passenger vehicles are, and at least as far as this is concerned would erase, if there are any, small benefit burning E85 in passenger cars would have because if we were to switch over to this and have a very large portion of the US's passenger car fleet run off of it... .....................You're gonna have to grow and harvest a hell of a lot more corn which will in turn bump the consumption of diesel fuel up greatly for the equipment usd to harvest this corn and whatnot, and drive the price of diesel fuel up even more.... I'm sorry folks, but E85 is a fucking political stunt.....it's not that great of idea. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!
