This article doesn't really sit well with me ...

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/06/12/...tors/index.html

QUOTE
The market is there thanks to an unprecedented "outsourcing" of conflict, according to Amy Clark, who led the Baghdad end of a small private security contractor

That really scares me ... If we can't fucking fight our own god damned wars we are REALLY fucked.

QUOTE
"Military doesn't even like to go where we are going and most of the companies that do this don't want to go where we are going ... and that's why we're going," explained one of Clark's men, nicknamed "Mr. GQ."

Great, let's pay mercenaries 5x as much or whatever to do our dirty work for us so we can claim US military casualties are lower than they really are...

I think this is crap ... I think they otta be paying people in the US armed forces this much....

It's also funny...anybody remember Rummy and Bush claiming they had plenty of troops in Iraq? rolleyes.gif

I like to take everything I read on a major news network with a grain of salt but I guess for some reason this article struck a nerve with me sad.gif

hazard pay should be a lot higher for the military I believe, and the regular pay should be upped a litte but instead of being put into military contractor's hands.

We've been using mercs for YEARS D:<

With good reason, too, I'd wager. Many of them know the territory/culture/enemy better than outsider-American troops. Not to mention they can handle some of the... dirtier operations with little to no legal blowback.

Just never gets talked about =o

These guys are not paid to go out and engage the enemy, they are not seek and destroy forces. They are there to provide cover for convoys and protect fixed assets. These are areas where the U.S. cannot afford to put troops, mainly because they have their own assets to protect.

A mercenary is a soldier who fights, or engages in warfare primarily for private gain, usually with little regard for ideological, national or political considerations.
____________
sorry to break it to y'all, but as a PS contractor, you work for the state dept of the US. you fill out the same mountain of paperwork that you do when applying for the NSA (trust me). you must possess an honorable discharge and be cleared for a 'secret' clearance. and you most definately have a national ideology.

also, you don't go out on raids or patrols. you protect valuable assets (VIPs). when the commandant of the marine corps came to iraq, it was BW covering him...contractors...not his active duty jarheads that are out patrolling the streets.

I hate whining...and I hate sitting on the sidelines talking shit. if you think...for those who think the military should make as much, well think about how few contractors there are doing this...compared to the millions of folks in the mil. it's not feasible.

and it's not all about money either. guys want to pull their weight, do something to help the effort...and the military is miserable, in particular grunt units are more so. they HAVE to pay guys well to do it without some kind of prisoner contract like the mil uses. most just think of active duty as a long ass initiation that paves the road for your future.

British used German Hussian troops, and they lost because they got drunk on Christmas!

From things you have posted and from friends I have talked to, the overall combat readiness and discipline of PC guys is a lot better than the grunts.

The actual report on CNN last night talked to a guy who was doing the job (2nd tour) because he believed in it and even if he was hurt or killed, the paycheck would help his family in the long run. The people who hire these guys (BW & Aegis) want guys who won't freeze up when the time comes to shoot back.

yeah...don't get me wrong...each has their own theater. when it comes to sheer explosive testosterone in the face of danger...it is truly hard to find a more fearless "bulletproof" door kicker than a 18-22 yr old infantryman. haven't learned to be scared yet (plus they have an asston of support resources, CAS, tanks, arty, etc). they fight and win the battles. period.

but take that guy, and send him to college and the real world for a while, then put him through the specialized training that contractors require for personal security on the small unit level. most are around 30-40...have combat experience under their belt (so they know what to expect and know they aren't indestructible), plus have a better idea of personal responsibility/accountability/problem solving that just comes with age.

I love the young groundpounders, their bravado and shit-talking and willingness to run into the face of danger...but the life/mission/attitudes/experience...it's night and day really.

in a one-on-one situation, the contractor would be the victor 10 out of 10 times.
