Looking for a way to travel relatively short distances, especially in a place where parking is a nightmare and bike theft, even when locked up, is a fairly common occurrence. How easy/difficult is it to skateboard anyway? Think that option might fit all the parameters, seeing as how they can be taken virtually anywhere easily. Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing?

I mean you're using it for transpo, not tricks. they're fun, and easy. |

I see kids on campus all the time trying to learn tricks... and sucking... without even kneepads/elbowpads. Sorry, but if I'm learning a trick that could leave me sprawled on the pavement with the slightest error, I'm gonna invest in some protection first.

after doing it for 20 years I too use kneepads or a helmet pretty consistently. but I learned the hard way that my brain needs protecting.
a couple of thoughts... one is it's better to learn your basics while you are still young...like 11-15 or so... but if you chose to learn now...then two...most of the guys who try to learn at the older age (18+) don't take baby steps. they just hop on...push and ride, then think "hey the next progression is to ollie off these steps". when they don't even know how to control their ollie consistently. it's mind boggling...you basically want a skate to feel as an extension of your body before trying anything. and that does not happen in week one. |
