Personally i don't think F is the hardest group. I think E & C are harder. Between E & C, id say E is the hardest. If the US does anything like it did on 02, with italy & czech, its a hard group for the first round.
winners: Group A Germany Costa Rica Group B England Paraguey Group C Ivory Coast Argentina Group D Mexico Iran Group E Italy US (if not US then Czech) Group F Brazil Croatia Group G France Switz Group H Spain Ukraine This post has been edited by woody: Jun 5 2006, 01:26 AM -------------------- |

QUOTE (chook @ Jun 4 2006, 03:00 PM) wouldn't it been Japan/Korea because of the alphabet order? that's opening a whole can of worms. first off, korea and japan hate each other... probably korean hating japan moreso (for occupying their country, torturing, executing, and everything else grant said). so, many koreans refuse to spell korea with a K but instead with a C, so it comes before japan in the alphabet. and/or they spell japan with a Z, so it's zapan. BUT.. some argue that it was originally spelled Corea, but when Japan occupied Korea they changed it to a K so Japan could be ahead of them in the alphabet. and the Z thing comes from the fact that Koreans cannot pronounce the letter Z, instead they say "J", so the word "plaza" sounds like "plaja" -------------------- ![]() |

Japan changed the spelling of Korea hundreds of years before WWII in order to be first in English alphabetical order? ... no. in Korean, 'Korea' (Hangook) appears at the end of the dictionary, and 'Japan' (Ilbon) is in the middle, surely the C(?)oreans would care more about their own dictionary than ours. Anyway, who gives a shit, FIVE DAYS UNTIL WE BEAT THE CZECHS. Woody, PLEEEASE explain how Portugal finishes behind Mexico and Iran, keeping in mind that Portugal is very good at soccer and Mexico and Iran are not. |

Portugals WC History: 1966: 3rd Place 1986: Out in 1st round 2002: Out in 1st Round Mexico, in the past 3 WC has made it to Round 2 Iran...well they don't have a great WC history, but I think they'll do better than Portugal and Angola this year. My decision cam down to Iran & Portugal. Portugal got a good coach, but i don't think they'll produce enough this WC to get out of the first round. p.s.: to say that Mexico is not good in soccer...they've got alot better team than Portugal -------------------- |

No, not hundreds of years before WWII... Japan's occupation of Korea was 1910-1945. They did it then. Or at least, that's what every Korean I've talked to about the subject says! QUOTE ... no. in Korean, 'Korea' (Hangook) appears at the end of the dictionary, and 'Japan' (Ilbon) is in the middle, surely the C(?)oreans would care more about their own dictionary than ours. well that's totally different. first off, korea has a big boner with the English language anyway, but most importantly, there's only one way to spell Hanguk in Korean since there's only one H sound. whereas in English, you can do it with a c or k. that's why. -------------------- ![]() |

Acknowledged, Portugal hasn't had alot of success at the World Cup, but there's more to it than that. Only one of those Portugal teams - 2002 - has ANY bearing on the current squad (same personnel, generation etc). Portugal started miserably (3-0 down after 30 minutes) against the USA but won the last 2/3 of the match 2-0. Then they massacred Poland (5-0 i think), and then lost to the (lucky?) hosts South Korea. Obviously not a good showing, but not as bad as simply saying "out in the first round" usually implies. They made the semis at Euro 2000 (win vs Germany, win vs England, win vs Turkey before losing to eventual champs France) ... they also got to the finals of Euro 2004 (win vs Spain, win vs England and win vs Holland). Bottom line, in the last 6 years, Portugal has played 30 minutes of truly awful soccer. They've got Luis Figo, Pedro Pauleta, Luis Boa Morte, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nuno Gomes, which (potentially) makes Portugal as good as anybody going forward, and that's good enough for me. |

A pair of one-goal wins, and out in the round of 16 against their archrivals? I dunno, I'm not impressed ... but only time will tell! LET'S PLAY THE FUTBOL! |
