The funniest thing was that the boycott/protest was ACTUALLY working. You would see couples/families with their canvas bags ready to go grocery shopping walking nearby, yet I never saw a single person enter the store while I was watching the "mayhem" -- ten bucks though that they drove their Prius to the next one three blocks over...

A few weeks back, I saw an ESPN headline where he told the Vikings that he wasn't going to play. I drop off the face of the earth for about two weeks and now I see him playing preseason games with them. Can someone condense the Brett Favre drama in a couple of sentences so that I can be caught up. Thanks.

i have hated suddenlink in lubbock, their customer service is terrible and the internet goes in and out all the time. I switched over to Uverse now and I am supposed to have a slower internet connection but it is actually faster than my suddenlink connection ever was.

I don't understand all of this hub-bub about advance technology swimsuits. As long as they are accessible to all swimmers, shouldn't it be a non-issue? I mean, the same thing happens in tennis -- I mean you COULD play with an old wooden racket from the 70s, but it is in your advantage to use the most modern of technologies. Shouldn't the same standard apply to swimming?

Oh, and looks like Phelps destroyed the competition with his "inferior" suit -- other than that one 200m race.

Yuengling is still the beer I have liked the best, I wish I could get it down here easier. It's mostly distributed in the northeast.

Agreed. I had this in Pennsylvania and it was a pretty good "standard" beer.

Does anyone use sprint anymore? I got an AT&T prepaid phone where any calls to AT&T phones are free -- anyways, my balance has slowly been declining since the only time I call a non-AT&T number is my parent's house. =/

The Amsterdam one cracked me up the most -- if only these people had been to Europe, then I think they might could pass judgment. "Cesspool of corruption/violence/etc..." hilarious.

Did you ever get a chance to eat at Summer Palace?
They were fan-freakin'-tastic. Too bad they closed down. ='(

I also miss Stein's. Pretty sure they've shutdown too.
'Twas an amazing little sandwich/soup/coffee shop downtown right next door to Inkfluence.

Damn you for making me remember Summer Palace and its awesomeness.

Also Stein's closed down, rennovated, re-opened, and is now closed down again (at least, last I checked).

Was Rosa's a chain (other than Lubbock)?

Yes. It started in San Angelo and LBK got them in the early 90s -- right when it sort of took off. They are scattered all across Texas (excluding the South) and I think there are a couple in Oklahoma now.

Taco Villa is also a local chain starting in Midland/Odessa.

QUOTE (Inferia @ Jul 23 2009, 10:54 AM) *
I think the problem here is how the situation was handled after the cops responded to the call. The stories are different between the two parties. Furthermore, the following problem is some people believe the cop's story over that of Gates', which may or may not suggest racial overtones. It is okay for someone to call the cops, it is okay for the cops to respond, but it is not okay for the cops to arrest a guy at his own home without a serious issue, and I think that's what the debate is about.

I'm not sure what the right course of action is for Gates, it seems like the Media likes to pick up on these type of news, especially when it involves someone as prominent as Gates. Though, Gates seem to have done his part to fan the flame, which may or may not be what he should be doing. I think in the end, it does one of many things, one get people to talk about race, this I think is not a bad thing. I understand the need for cohesiveness and an end to divisiveness, and I believe this can not be accomplished without discussing the issues. On the other hand, frequent discussions on differences, may result in a lot of tension, but I think in the long run this may be a more beneficial thing.

I don't know if this is a right analogy, but I always bring up issues we have in the relationship with my boyfriend. He doesn't, or didn't I should say, want to deal with for a long time. In the end, I think he felt too that it was important to deal with it earlier on than later when it might be too late or more difficult to deal with. Of course, our issues are private and personal, so it's not something that's worth going to the media about. But there are issues that are important, and prevalent in society. Maybe Gates is too quick in deducing this down to a race-based issue, but that means it's also too quick to deducing it down to not a race-based issue... I don't know when the "right" time it is to talk about this, but I guess it's happening now, so that's why people are talking about it.

Here here! Excellent post.

So wait, he holds no grudges against the person who called-in the break-in but thinks the cops profiled him? Isn't that a little oxy-moronic? "Hey, there's a black man going into that house, better call the police" = good. Cops showing up and arresting someone based on the call and sorting it out at the police station = not good. rolleyes.gif

More like "hey there's a man forcing his way into the house, better call the police" which seems reasonable, and Gates understands this. Gates said, while giving an interview, that if someone was breaking into his house at the time he was giving the interview, he would hope the same person would again call police.

The part of the story that I found to be the most upsetting is when the cop entered the home without Gates' permission -- following him when he went to get his ID. Isn't that illegal?

Also, Gates' holds no grudges for the person who originally called in the break-in. He was on CNN last night for the "Black in America" series, and said that he owes someone a fruit basket.

Finally, I think it was a good point discussing how people find the police officer's report believable as opposed to Gates' perspective. I mulled that over for a while.

that's what I figured. can't let A&M or Texas do anything we're not doing.
how's the progress of the new BA going?

There's something going on at the Business Administration? The only construction that I see on campus is that they are making new booths for the traffic/parking people scattered throughout campus (the ones that tell you you can't cut through campus) and also are fortifying the underground tunnels near memorial circle. Oh and the library parking lot got repaved and some dorms are getting new windows.

Seems like a case of "keeping up with the Jones" since A&M and UT have one.

I've been thinking about this hiring and have to admit I've been going back and forth about it.

I can see how Tech could lose credibility with this move (especially in academia), but I can also see how nice it is to get a high profile individual teaching at Tech -- even if his political affiliation and methods I might disagree with.

It's a shame that he is only doing a lecture for a class of 15 -- I guess even in hyperconservative country he is afraid of some sort of backlash if he opened it up to a larger crowd.
