we have the same variation in the U.S. between "route" [root & rowt].
like the song "route 66," in which most people say [root].
so it is a thing that routes.

from the latin, you would think it would be [rut].

I could say "root 66" but saying "rooters" in reference to a network router just sounds weird to me. Same with the power tool router.
