Well the college doesn't make a whole lot of money off them. It's my understanding that most sports programs basically break even. But the coaches and such... yeah, they make an assload.

Most are either walkons or get no scholarship. And any free rides are completely offset by ridiculous restrictions placed on athletes by the NCAA. You can't hold a full or part time job as a college athlete (football, at least). You can't borrow fifty bucks from a friend because it's a violation of NCAA rules. Your wealthy uncle can't buy you a new car for your birthday. Your days with athletics and academics are usually 10+ hours long. Athletics cuts in to state sanctioned school holidays. It isn't as glamorous as people make it out to be. -------------------- |

The point isn't that they should receive a paycheck for $x for playing, it's that there's all kinds of businesses making tons of money off of the big name teams who play well, and everyone involved except the players themselves get rich. It's just not right IMHO. |

I don't quite think that's equal compensation for the money some of them generate though. IMHO just let them do endorsement deals and such just like the pros can do. Let EA sports use their names and throw them a bone in the process. Or let them get small royalty kickbacks from those making tons of cash off their success.
I'm not sayin they deserve millions, but when some asshats print out Welker t-shirts & jerseys and sell probably $500,000 worth during his college career... shoot, throw the guy a bone. |
