why arent birth control pills OTC
thats what i was thinking about the other day. there are side affects and you are supposed to get pap smears and all the jazz before getting a prescription but it seems pointless and there are really bad side affects and certain health risks to taking aspirin (which is OTC)

Pap smears don't have anything to do with whether you can take birth control pills, actually. They require them just as a way to give you an annual one, to check for cervical cancer.

QUOTE (Jessica @ Dec 22 2007, 01:00 AM) *
they are by prescription because certain people have to take certain kinds. I had to be on a low estrogen pill because I would vomit all night with the regular Ortho Tricyclin Lo (sp) stuff...so they put me on something called Allese (sp)

Also your skin type has a lot to do with what kind of BC pill you are on

Dunno about skin type, but yeah, stuff in your medical profile can definitely determine what pill you need to be on. Most people aren't informed enough to figure out the details on their own. I, for instance, can't be on combined hormone pills because it spikes my blood pressure like mad (I'm already on pills for hypertension, but I didn't want to up my dose). Instead, I tried progestin-only pills, which worked like a charm, but aren't for everyone because they're more time-sensitive than pills with estrogen. Now I'm on a progestin-only subdermal implant which is awesome because I don't have to remember pills and it lasts for three years. thumsbup.gif

We could always slit their throats and turn them into meat pies to feed to those who are homeless/jobless for actual real reasons? (Yes, I saw Sweeney Todd yesterday)

i thought the pap smears were to test for dyslplasia (sp) and such hoha happenings that can be accelerated or dangerous while having the sex

I don't think sex accelerates those conditions, but I could be wrong. I just know I had a doc (at TTU) tell me that they really just bribe women with BC pills in order to get them the annual pap smears, but they're not actually needed. Student health center at UNM didn't require paps for BC prescriptions at all.
