ya, I am borrowing a drive bay from a friend, and i found out the 200 gig hd i have is just fine. so i got a lot of data off of it. I was just wondering about system restores and such as well. I'm quite aware of the "back up the data by putting it on there" technique Chuck haha

Personally, I'd not do system restore stuff on the backup drive, I would simply backup my data and if I have a harddrive problem on the primary machine, wipe the drive and start over, pulling my data back onto the harddrive.

I keep a FireWire drive attached to my computer when working (switching to eSATA soon) and have another FireWire drive that I backup to monthly and keep in a fireproof safe (switching to a safety deposit box soon).

A copy of all of my photos goes onto both drives, with the one that's connected having the edited photos as well. All of my documents go on both using some simple scripts to grab everything and copy it. That's where document management comes into play, as long as you keep things organized and in central locations, backing up won't be an issue.

You wouldn't believe how many buds of mine come up to me for help have a backup drive, their comp takes a crap, and the thing they did yesterday wasn't backed up so they lost it.

I got this a while back:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136196
and it kicks ass. I plugged it into my gigabit switch and the thing is basically seen as a separate computer on the network. Also has a nice browser based config manager.

I was wondering about those. I've seen them at Best Buy but was worried about the fact it was on the network.

It just gets an ip and you connect through a browser or does it show up as a server?

It shows up as if it was another computer on your network. You can just browse to it via UNC path. Don't let the reviews you'll see say otherwise. Supposedly the software that comes with it sucks and that's all the problems people have. It configs just like a router. As with routers, the first thing I do when I open the package is toss the CD that came with it. You look up the IP it got via DHCP, then browse to that. This is a rock solid piece. It's been plugged in for nearly four months and I haven't touched it since I first plugged it in.

I just added a review since the dipshits on there can't figure the thing out.
