'stros picked up Miguel Tejada woot!
gave up Luke Scott + Matt Albers + Troy Patton + Dennis Sarfate + Mike Costanzo Overall a great deal IMHO. So long as we have a couple more deals to make to grab some pitching. |

They traded Troy Patton (will be a stud), Matt Albers (biased because I know him, but should be serviceable), Luke Scott (probably good for 20-25 homers a season), and Mike Constanzo (didn't even realize the Astros had him, but he was a top 10 Phillies prospect)
And they get a past his prime shortstop who's average at best on defense, declining offensive numbers the past few years, who's overpaid. Oh, yeah. And there's a good chance he'll be one of the names in the Mitchell Investigation released tomorrow. Smart, smart move. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Just wait, Impala will be back to make this into a huge argument drama fest They can have their opinions. Just like you can come into every damn thread I post in to make some stupid remark about how I post. The Astros have had one prospect out of their last 10 or so actually work out. Look at the washouts they've had just in the past few years... Chris Burke, Jason Lane, Morgan Ensberg, Richard Hidalgo. A bunch of friggin one season wonders. I'm sick of the days we had under Poopoorah where we'd bring in someone like Preston Wilson and think they were going to be our savior. Poopoorah wouldn't go after much big talent. Carlos Lee was the only one. I'm glad to see them dump some prospects for a big name player. Luke Scott was ok but there's pretty much no place for him except on the bench. Albers was a mediocre starting pitcher, something we have plenty of. Sarfante was trade trash from the Bourn deal. Constanzo & Patton were just prospects. This really is just a Scott + Albers for Tejada deal, which IMHO is awesome. Now trade Burke & Wigginton for a pitcher and we're good to go. |

The Astros have had one prospect out of their last 10 or so actually work out. Look at the washouts they've had just in the past few years... Chris Burke, Jason Lane, Morgan Ensberg, Richard Hidalgo. You can say that about any prospect and any franchise in baseball. Chris Burke hit the 18th inning home run in the division series that eventually led to Houston getting to its only World Series in 2005. Jason Lane had 26 homers that same year. And Morgan Ensberg had 36 homers that same year. And I'm not even gonna talk about Richard Hidalgo, who was a prospect in 1995. This is 2007. That's more than ten years ago. You consider those guys washouts? A washout is someone like Elijah Dukes, who will end up incarcerated before he ever sets foot in a big league clubhouse again. QUOTE I'm glad to see them dump some prospects for a big name player. You got a big name player only in name. You can find tons of 18 HR/81 RBI guys. And he's going to a hitter's park to a pitcher's park QUOTE Constanzo & Patton were just prospects. I sat with Hunter Pence when he was signing autographs at Academy for five bucks before he got called up. At that time he was only a "prospect." Two months later he was batting .360 in the bigs. Probably would have won ROY if he didn't get injured and Ryan Braun didn't put together the best rookie season since Pujols. Neither Constanzo nor Patton are "just prospects." Both are in Baseball America's Astros' Top 10, ahead of guys like Reineke, Einertson, and Iorg. Constanzo has arguably the best power in their minor league system and Patton has suberb control. Talk all you want about the big leagues, but don't try to argue about prospects. I've written articles for BA and I've forgotten far more than you'll ever learn. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

You can say that about any prospect and any franchise in baseball. Chris Burke hit the 18th inning home run in the division series that eventually led to Houston getting to its only World Series in 2005. One important homer doesn't make up for a .229 average. Jason Lane had 26 homers that same year. Like I said, one season wonder. He bat a whopping .178 this past year and .201 in '06. We could toss in an off-day pitcher and get better bench hitting. And Morgan Ensberg had 36 homers that same year. Same thing. One season wonder. The past couple years he probably watched more strike 3's go by than anyone else in the majors. Sure '05 he was great, then his BA dropped 50 points and never recovered. His defense this past year was horrible. And I'm not even gonna talk about Richard Hidalgo, who was a prospect in 1995. This is 2007. That's more than ten years ago. I've been a big astros fan for a long time. The point of mentioning him was that it's been a very long stretch of "lets get this sorta ok guy who might turn out really good and he'll be our savior!" For years they've gone for guys like this instead of big talent. You consider those guys washouts? A washout is someone like Elijah Dukes, who will end up incarcerated before he ever sets foot in a big league clubhouse again. Semantics... use whatever word you want. Call them some-dipshit-gm-thought-this-guy-would-be-good-but-was-totally-wrong-and-now-instead-of-dealing-the-guy-like-we-should-have-we-got-nothing-for-him's. You got a big name player only in name. You can find tons of 18 HR/81 RBI guys. And he's going to a hitter's park to a pitcher's park You can find tons of 81 RBI guys? I don't think so. Either that or you're just being melodramatic. And when you do happen to find an 80+ RBI guy who's available, what should the Astros have traded to get him? I sat with Hunter Pence when he was signing autographs at Academy for five bucks before he got called up. At that time he was only a "prospect." Two months later he was batting .360 in the bigs. Probably would have won ROY if he didn't get injured and Ryan Braun didn't put together the best rookie season since Pujols. So now you're gonna compare Constanzo & Patton to Pence? Neither Constanzo nor Patton are "just prospects." Both are in Baseball America's Astros' Top 10, ahead of guys like Reineke, Einertson, and Iorg. Constanzo has arguably the best power in their minor league system and Patton has suberb control. Top 10 prospects. You seem to think all prospects will turn out like Pence. If that was the case with Constanzo, Baltimore wouldn't have already sent him down to the minors. Talk all you want about the big leagues, but don't try to argue about prospects. I've written articles for BA and I've forgotten far more than you'll ever learn. Look at your own precious f'n site that you "write articles for" 1. J.R. Towles, c 2. Felipe Paulino, rhp 3. Troy Patton, lhp 4. Juan Gutierrez, rhp 5. Michael Bourn, of 6. Mike Costanzo, 3b 7. Bud Norris, rhp 8. Brad James, rhp 9. Chad Reineke, rhp 10. Eli Iorg, of Giving up #3 and #6 in that list + a bench LF and a mediocre pitcher to replace a zero offense Everett with a 80+ RBI guy is a bad deal? edit: Oh and one last thing, if you really believe this is the worst trade ever for the Astros, you're out of your mind *cough* jennings deal *cough* |

Well there aren't a lot of trades that are bad at the table. But it was pretty much one of the worst deals in history in the end.
Tejada on the mitchell report... wonder what the backlash is with that? |
