So my car broke down and I'm pretty sure it's going to be pretty damn expensive to fix. I'm thinking of buying a motorcycle because they should be cheaper and easier to maintain. Am I right in thinking this?

i believe driving a motorcycle your insurance bumps up pretty high. in some circumstances that can outweigh the cost effectiveness. it may just be cheaper to get a mid 90s civic or something

I'm not motorcycle person, but I'd doubt they're easier to maintain. Maybe cheaper to maintain? Cat's right though, just get a 10-15 yr old beater that runs.

Look into a lease on a new vehicle. A lot of times you can get a new vehicle with the option to buy after 3 years for cheaper monthly payments than a used car because the financing is better. Motorcycle insurance is insane.

My motorcycle insurance wasn't that bad, seems like it was fairly cheap actually.
To me, it was easier to maintain. Hell, you can reach every part...that made it easier right there. I'd recommend either a Honda or Yamaha. You can find good quality used bikes for under $5k. This post has been edited by Psykopath: Dec 10 2007, 02:21 PM -------------------- |

its probably a good idea to start out with something that you can handle for your 1st bike. i would recommend a Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa or a Honda 1100 XX Super Blackbird, these bikes are particularly renowned for their forgiveness.

Motorcycles can actually cost a little more to maintain. Motorcycle shops typically charge a higher rate and you usually have to buy parts from the $tealership. I would recommend getting something that is less than 10 years old and fuel injected if possible. Old carburetors get gummed up during the off season and can be a real pain in the ass to work on.
As far as insurance, mine is less than $30/month and can be much cheaper if you have the balls to drop Personal Injury Protection. You will get 40+ MPG on almost any bike, so you will save alot of money in gas, especially if you used to drive a big truck or something. The only other thing to think about is how cold it gets in Lubbock (if you're there). You probably only get 6-7 months of decent riding weather there, maybe a little more if you have good gear. You definitely won't want to be driving your cycle during the ice/snow, etc... |

I thought about buying a motorcycle when I went to UT...motorcycle parking was right next to my classes and was way cheaper. Parking at UT is insane. I still kinda want a bike, but I won't for sure now that I'm having a baby. Cool to know insurance isn't that bad, but are you all over the age of 23? If a person is under 23, I bet it's sky high.
