Do what I do. Have 3 cats. One is bound to want to cuddle up to you and be warm and fuzzy cute.

"pregnant women" arent supposed to own cats because of something in cat feces that is harmful. Yay for the parenting class I took at Tech

You can own a cat, you just aren't supposed to deal with their litter box. But obviously, if you live alone and are the only one available to scoop litter, you shouldn't own a cat.

I know that, but who else would do it?
Honestly, 40% of Americans have already been exposed to the disease and have gained an immunity to it. I've had cats in the past so I probably am already immune. I don't like cats though

Haha, I edited my post at the same time you posted.

Anywho, it's not your immunity that matters, it's the baby's. smile.gif But you don't like cats, so it's a moot point.

its toxoplasmosis thats harmful to pregnant women and its an infection from a parasite commonly found in cat feces but the problem isnt just with cat liter. they tell you you arent supposed to be around or handle cats because cats clean themselves including their booties and thats another way they can transfer it to you (post cleaning they rub up on you or furniture with their paws/fur that they licked right after their butts)
it can be really really harmful - i would not just not own a cat but attempt to avoid them entirely

but you also have that risk from uncooked meats and stuff! i guess its just all about being boring for awhile

Everything I've read just cautions pregnant women against handling raw meat, dealing with the litter box, and gardening. Washing your hands after petting them is an extra precaution, but people don't really need to avoid cats entirely.

However, I did find out that only 10-20% of women of child-bearing age have had prior exposure (and thus immunity) to toxoplasma. If you are immune, there's virtually no risk to the fetus. Can get a blood test to find out for sure, which I might do whenever I have kids (I currently own a cat and might still then).

Cats paws are dirty because they step in their litter. Cat is right. Pregnant women should avoid cats alltogether.
