Yes you can, there is no law against it, however, a store CAN prohibit CHL's with a sign that correctly and properly recites the statute forbiding CHL's. (if not posted correctly you can still carry on the premises) that's what i was talking about. every convenience store i have ever seen has that sign

that's what i was talking about. every convenience store i have ever seen has that sign well yes, even though a lot don't display it correctly. But we aren't arguing whether convenience stores should opt to disallow, we discussing whether a state institution should by law ban CHL's from campus, instead of by choice of the campus (at least i thought that was the argument). obviously the particular place can prohibit CHL's by choice, we are just arguing whether its a good idea for a college to have them banned. -------------------- |

I was stating otherwise. What is the fucking purpose of carrying a gun to school? Seriously. Don't treat possible violence with more possible violence. I dont like guns at all, but I admit that they are useful for 1) law enforcement and military 2) hunting 3) protecting property. A school is a place of learning. If you live in that much fear of society, then go sit in a padded room. I dont like the idea of ANYONE carrying a gun, because that person can just jump on the looney bus at any time. No fucking thanks. Leave your gun at home. I'll take my chances Seung-Hui Cho's out there.

And just because someone has a CHL doesn't mean they are in complete fear of society, in fact many take the CHL class and NEVER OWN A GUN. And i'll put more faith into someone getting certified and taking care to get a CHL over a normal person to "jump on the looney bus". And a person "jumping on the looney bus" doesn't need a CHL in order to conceal a handgun and start killing people. -------------------- |

you miss my "jumping on the looney bus" point. all it takes is one instant of rage from a completely sane person to do something irrational. I dont know if you notice, but people tend to act irrationally when something bad happens to them. A bad grade on a test, significant other problems, etc.... while we handle things like this everyday, have you ever had something like this happen to you and done something stupid because of it? Having a gun attached to your hip is just an added temptation. I despise concealed handguns in public places. Its strange to me to think that people walking right next to me could have a gun on them or people driving alongside my car could have a gun....this coming from someone who has a gun pulled on the while driving. People act irrationally.

Why the hell would students need firearms in school?
I can just imagine some hung over Phi Delt walking up and finding out he bombed his B Law test by 36 points and snapping. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

i just wouldnt want my university to turn into a western style shootout whatever the cause or meaningful intention. i would like to avoid bullets flying anywhere around me so instead of a western shoot out, you would prefer the boston massacre -------------------- |

Looking at this purely from a legal standpoint, I don't think it's constitutional for firearms to be banned on public property, whether that's a post office, a school, or just walking down the street. I fully support the right of private citizens to form their own restrictions on guns in their homes, cars, and private businesses. If I own a restaurant and I'm not comfortable with my patrons having a gun, I want to be able to post the proper signage and (theoretically) keep guns out.
From a pure practicality standpoint, I think the safety issue here is pretty nill. People were afraid of Western shootouts occurring when Texas passed its CHL laws in the first place, but that simply hasn't happened. It hasn't happened in any place with concealed carry laws, to my knowledge. Is there a possibility that somebody will go all loony and go on a killing spree? Snap from the stress? Sure. But frankly, I'm more worried about that from someone carrying a gun illegally than from someone with a CHL. Furthermore, if people are allowed to carry on campus, there would be more responsible gun owners around to help stop someone on a rampage. No, I don't think we should get rid of UPD, but it's nice to have that extra manpower, if needed. -------------------- |

Would y'all be willing to lose federal aide? Just a question because that's a possibility of us doing this.

It is completely unnecessary to carry a gun on a campus. Texas State's campus has had a lot of controversy lately not just about CHL but also UPD's decision to start carrying some AR gun..I believe its an AR 16. Whatever. I dont like that either, but I would rather UPD carry semi automatic assault rifles than students carry concealed handguns. I just dont see what we are building up the masses for. Sheesh. We act like college campuses have become war grounds because of a few isolated incidents. I know we dont live in happy fairy land where peace abounds, but at the same time I see absoletley no point in making a college campus a place to draw yer weapons. Its all a fear some people have. I see the point of having a gun in your home, while I wouldnt own one myself especially when I have kids. I would rather make sure I live somewhere safe than bring something that has the intention of scaring/hurting/killing someone. Its negative. Of course, if I had to live somewhere super dangerous I would consider it. HELLO!!!! COLLLEGE CAMPUSES ARE SOME OF THE SAFEST PLACES TO BE THESE DAYS! the crime rate on campuses is so much less than in other places. Do we really need to gun it up?

Yeah, I think it was according to US News, but Texas State University is the safest campus in the US.

I just wanted to know because I may be wrong, but since we are also funded the federal government and we wouldn't be following federal guidelines by having weapons on campus, we'd lose funding. We all know that the State isn't giving shit to Texas public institutions.
Oh, and for people that keep equating the PD to CHL holders, big difference. I can actually see the gun on the cop, you can't see the gun for people with CHLs. Just a tad bit against the law. Just so ya know. |

Oh, and for people that keep equating the PD to CHL holders, big difference. I can actually see the gun on the cop, you can't see the gun for people with CHLs. Just a tad bit against the law. Just so ya know. you are the stupidest cunt i have ever met, and i pray you NEVER get into politics. CHL means CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE. you are NOT allowed to show it to people, because then it becomes a fashion accessory. god dammit you just need to shut the fuck up, you sound so much smarter when you don't talk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concealed_carry QUOTE In the United States, carrying concealed weapon (CCW, also known as concealed carry) is the legal authorization for private citizens to carry a handgun or other weapons in public in a concealed manner, either on the person or in close proximity to the person. The choice of permitted weapon depends on the state; some states restrict the weapon to a single handgun, whereas others permit multiple handguns or even martial arts weapons to be carried. CCW is a more generalized form of what some states call a concealed handgun license (CHL).
The current trend towards adopting concealed carry laws has been met with opposition; however, no state which has adopted a "shall-issue" concealed carry law has reversed its decision as of yet. Currently, 48 US states allow some form of concealed carry and about half provide for some variant on non-concealed "open-carry". In 13 states, the same permit or license is required to open-carry a handgun, but most states do not require a permit or license to carry openly; in six states, even with concealed-carry licenses or permits, open-carry is prohibited. -------------------- |
