Oh come on, this is an easy decision, you take the money. If you honestly feel that we live in a true democracy governed by the people and your vote/opinion matters that much, that is another story, but the truth is we don't live in this utopian democratic society (how else could we still be in Iraq when the publics support is overwhelmingly against it?)... Also, if you think that other generations wouldn't do the same thing, you would be sorely mistaken (I'm sure a lot of our great great grandparents would have given up their right to vote to find Gold out West!). Greed has been prevalent regardless of what century you live in... And on the whole "all the people died to give me that right" I would image that the soldiers who are indirectly protecting our right to vote would/would have personally give(n) up their voting rights in return for a guaranteed safe passage home...everyone has their price... Well fucking excuse me for not being some greedy, disrespectful little shit that has no principles and/or cares nothing for the principles of democracy. I'm with Zach on this one.
Yes, the system is flawed. Yes, the elections might be rigged. Yes, the candidates all seem to run together after a while. But opting out entirely solves nothing. -------------------- |

i just prefer to spend my time DOING service and good than to vote for the idea of it. Since I don't have the money to give to charities, i volunteer about 10 hours a week, sometimes more if there are big events going on here in the community.
and i voted in the 2004 election, even though i knew in texas it wouldn't matter other than being another vote because Bush would carry the state. i feel that my freedom can be exercised in many ways other than voting, so don't feed me the "thousands of people died fighting tyranny" (so that we could be run over others) excuse. They also died so that we could exploit others for financial gain, but you don't see many people still heralding that right as part of being a patriotic american. And let's not forget that this fight to vote has been inconsistent here. How many years did we deny blacks the right to vote? the full vote? women? How come 16 year old with jobs have to pay taxes but can't vote? It isn't the great and mighty privilege, and it was a system designed by and for the straight white wealthy men to control the system and the system hasn't changed. |

keep in mind that the people that have lost their lives in previous wars (i'm talking about world wars) were fighting for a different world...a world that changed
life was different then and people had more respect for politics and democracy now the only thing that is important is who is tila tequila going to pick to be her one night love slave or which laguna beach girl is going to get pregnant we're greedy, selfish, and arrogant and it will be the end of us -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

we're greedy, selfish, and arrogant and it will be the end of us If by we you mean the entire world past or present, I would agree with this... I don't think that us Americans are any different than anybody else around the world, ask a starving African, and I guarantee that he would take the money! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And Epic is right, think about how much more good you could do with 1000000 dollars than a single vote. You have to weigh the pros and cons. Well I cast a single vote in a sea of millions for a candidate I like but could ptentially end up making some of the worst decisions under his/her presidency that I don't agree with, or I could vaccinate thousands of needy Africans for malaria... Whether one decides to use all or part of his money to do this is irrelevant, I think that helping/saving one person easily outweighs my right to vote... I would find it rather difficult to believe if (in another hypothetical) someone was dying and it was proposed that you could save this person's life, but you only have to give up the right to vote you would say "no, my belief in "democratic" principles and my participation in this process is way too important for me..." And I don't understand why you (Psycopath) wouldn't agree with the above statement(s) because in another thread you were championing an effort of good deeds outweighing an ideological message. This is, in essence, the same thing... -------------------- ![]() |

NONE of you have any fucking clue what you're saying.
You're all nickel and diming this shit. Thinking of a few and not the many. What if EVERYONE gave up their right to vote in favor of money, a car, Jessica Simpson BJs, etc?! What then? Everyone is satiated for a bit but then when people want change...OH SHIT SON, sorry no choice for you. Like the tyranny or have a civil war. But then again many of you seem to be all young adult emo "there is no choice" wah wah any way. And many of you seem to forget that "voting" doesn't just occur every 4 years to pick a President. Ever heard of voting on issues? I know, many of you have probably never voted on a bond election, amendment referendum, etc. QUOTE And I don't understand why you (Psycopath) wouldn't agree with the above statement(s) because in another thread you were championing an effort of good deeds outweighing an ideological message. This is, in essence, the same thing... Holy shit...this little gem just caught my eye. Where in the blue hell did I ever say I'd rather cast a vote than volunteer/do community service? I'm for both. They aren't mutually exclusive. This post has been edited by Psykopath: Nov 21 2007, 02:21 PM -------------------- |

Yes if the offer was extended towards everybody all hell would break loose, anarchy, blah blah blah... But I was under the impression that it is solely on a single individual basis. If someone approached you and you alone, and said "here's a million dollars, you can have it if you give up the right to vote." I would say yes and you would say no. And all I'm arguing is a lot more good could come from 1000000 dollars than a single vote. Why do you think otherwise? -------------------- ![]() |

I think that money isn't the only factor but is a substantial one. Let me rephrase...you have two very kind hearted humanitarian beings. One has a lot of money, the other doesn't. I would say that the one who is more able financially to help out would be able to reach more people... -------------------- ![]() |
