I don't generally have a problem with Nuclear energy as long as I don't have to live within a 10 mile radius of a power plant. And therin lies one of the biggest reasons nuclear power usage/development hasn't been expanded: The "not in my backyard" complaint. -------------------- |

MOST of the waste are low threat items like gloves. thats what my professor who has been a UN inspector and supervised the safety procedures at a nuclear power plant said. think about how many pairs of gloves the workers go through in a single day and they cant rewear them.

I would say that it is a well founded fear and argument. Then again, the waste produced on a daily basis from oil is having health and environmental impacts. Death via radiation seems much more painful than the slow suffocation of carbon monoxide.

I just like that phrase and wanted to point it out when it was eventually mentioned. -------------------- |

Fair enough
I guess 200 million tons of gloves, clothing, etc is a lot. However 52,000 tons of spent fuel is also a lot of waste. QUOTE The amount of HLW worldwide is currently increasing by about 12,000 metric tons every year source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_waste I am not saying that I oppose Nuclear power completely, I am just apprehensive about expanding the number of plants currently in the United States. Well i think everyone agrees we need safe ways to dispose of the waste, but as you said, the amount of pollutants from other sources of energy are FAR more dangerous than the relatively small amount of radio-active waste we have to deal with. But yes, we need to make sure to contain the waste in safe manners.... (at least we have the oppurtunity to control the radio active waste, vs not being able to control any of the gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels) -------------------- |

Pebble bed reactors are some of the newest and safest nuclear reactors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebble_bed_reactor
I am pursuing an opportunity to visit one of these types of plants for reliability maintenance. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Of course we should, but labor unions own the democratic party, and coal mines and coal fired power plants not only are the most heavily polluting entities by themselves in the world, they're are run by, you guessed it, labor unions!!! YAY!!!!
ever wonder why such filthy things such as coal-fired power plants somehow got exempted from the clean air act 20-some years ago? Wow, that wouldn't have been because the labor unions bought off jmmy carter? WHy are they STILL exempt? That couldn't be because the AFL-CIO buys off every democrat in washington? Nah, Coal is WONDERFUL, the democrats say so and THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CARE ABOU THE ENVIRONMENT SO VOTE FOR THEM!!!! Nuclear power is the only thing that will make a hydrogen economy work, even in part. But it will never come to pass because people are too illiterate to understand the good it would do -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Screw the hydrogen economy. It's bunk and probably always will be. Electric cars w/ electricity generated by nuclear power plants are the way to go.

Screw the hydrogen economy. It's bunk and probably always will be. Electric cars w/ electricity generated by nuclear power plants are the way to go. Its viable if the water is broken into hydrogen at the station (or at your house...hell). All depends on the waste from hydrogen vs. waste from batteries that don't work anymore. -------------------- |
