I was on facebook and saw an ad wanting me to sign a petition to stop a new bill that would give more funding towards nuclear energy (supported by moveon.org). I'm an environmentalist and support nuclear energy...I don't really understand moveon's position (another Chernobyl OMGGG?!)
QUOTE Building new atomic reactors in an age of terror threats is not only scary, but the toxic waste from nuclear power threatens our health and our planet. hmm, seems they are using the terrorist scare tactic as well...I'm a democrat, but on certain issues moveon is fucking crazy to me... I understand the whole toxic waste, but it is fairly minimal and can be quarantined in isolated remote parts. Plus it can produce ample more energy than are coal based systems (which are also not very environmentally friendly)... Plus developed countries (like France) has shown that it can work. -------------------- ![]() |

Hehe, at first I thought this thread topic meant:
![]() But yes, I am also a logical environmentalist (words don't usually go together...damn modern hippies) that supports nuclear power. -------------------- |

I'm definitely in favor of nuclear power.
its my understanding that the newer designs are much safer then the designs used in the past like Chernobyl. The newer designs are made to fail into a safe status, while the older designs Tended to fail into a dangerous state. as for the waste... I dunno... blast it at the sun to prevent it from dying on us in a billion years? -------------------- ~Clatto Verata Nicto

always have been in favor
most of the waste that comes out of nuclear power plants are things like gloves and protective clothing the radiation danger of these is very low i remember a thread about nuclear power on here and it met quite a bit of opposition -------------------- Little monkeys making money

from what i read they want more funding and movement towards viable alternative options like solar/wind/even heavier reliance on coal or people who think oil and coal are good enough.
basically anything other than nuclear even if that means taking a step back technology wise -------------------- Little monkeys making money

so i'm curious, what does the opposition want instead of nuclear power plants? Daisies, smiles, and rainbows. ::EDIT:: And I'm also very pro-solar energy. I hope to have solar cells on any future house I own. This post has been edited by Psykopath: Nov 14 2007, 08:28 PM -------------------- |

I dunno... blast it at the sun to prevent it from dying on us in a billion years? I saw a great video that explained Chernobyl and how the reactors are designed now. If the NRC is worth anything, only failsafe designs will be allowed. As for the waste, they're burying it in a mountain right now. However, shooting it towards the sun is always a good idea, as long as we don't miss. Good luck finding a good launch site that doesn't have a chance of nuclear fallout though. I am all for more nuclear power. It is the power of the future, at least until we can harness fusion. |

i've got a cousin who researches the wind power stuff (you know those huge wind turbines (sp?) between lubbock and sweetwater and other places). apparently they're on the rise and do a lot of cool things.

yeah wind power works great especially out here but its still not super efficient (though getting better and better). but nuclear power is and you can build a nuclear power plant basically anywhere
a balance of nuclear, solar and wind is what i hope for or HARNESS THE POWER OF THE VOLCANOESSSSS -------------------- Little monkeys making money

i started the thread a while back about gas running out and how nuclear enery could help to make little waste and produce hydrogen for cleaner cars.
i am very much for. Nuclear is the cleanest and longest lasting answer we have right now until we can find an even better solution of power. Most of the fear of nuclear energy is irrational nowadays. The fears are just fed by stupid interest groups. -------------------- |

Nuclear energy is relatively safe. The only problem is that when something does go wrong, which does not happen very often, the consequences are quite dire. Also, power plants create a lot more waste than just "gloves"
I don't generally have a problem with Nuclear energy as long as I don't have to live within a 10 mile radius of a power plant. And how about we don't shoot anything at the sun... This post has been edited by Dr. Gonzo: Nov 14 2007, 10:32 PM -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?
