It isn't just Austin residents. There was the Oregon State game where they missed a major call and more. All because locals are reffing and reviewing tape.

they said before the game started that one of the officials used to work with/was good friends with the UT coach. they didnt even mention then that they were austin residents

I think the possibility of referees colluding with a particular team is pretty remote (regardless if they are residents of the same town/alumni of a particular university). I think it is safe to say that referees want to 1) respect the impartiality associated with their profession, 2) avoid any potential backlash if they did happen to make a call which "throws a game" 3) show their respect of the game by making it as equal as possible.

Granted there are some exceptions (Tim Donnelley), but I think the statements above are true. Bad calls/good calls come and go pretty regularly. We have been a part of games where calls have gone for us, and calls have gone against us, but to say any of those games were intentionally reffed unfairly (solely because of locals reffering) is ridiculous.

In addition, there were plenty of other more plausible reasons why we lost the game on Saturday (I mean we pretty much suck this year and blow these type of games regularly)...

i think they were shitty calls and more blatant then i have seen recently but im not killing myself over it. i dont care that much BUT i thought because the impartiality is supposed to be a big deal that there would be simple rules about refs being previous employees of one team and stuff like that. it seems they have enough different people to ref games that rules like that wouldnt interfere with peoples jobs

But, to an extent, you have to realize that the reason they have these "neutral" refs is for the purpose of making sure there isn't a bias. Otherwise, why not get the same reffing unit to travel with the team each week?

While there were several bad/questionable calls last week against, I think Leach should have stood up and said something after LAST year's Texas game. There were a ton of them in 2006 that were completely indefensible. He would have had a lot more ammo with which to work.

I thought I remembered hearing something about the coaching staff putting together a video of all the clips of questionable calls from last year's game to send to the NCAA. Maybe they didn't. Maybe nothing ever came of it?

Yes, we did lose the game on more than just the reffing. If our defense has to be out on the field for 8 solid minutes of game time, something's not right on our side of the ball. But I think the negative feelings come from some bad calls as much as they come from the disappointment that we didn't redeem ourselves this year. You do have to acknowledge the irony that the game we get screwed the worst when it comes to the refs has been Texas two years in a row. Maybe just a fluke, though. And don't say we're just trying to find something to complain about - if we would have lost this game, or the one last year, and not had complaints about the refs, then I would have been able to accept at face value that their team is better...
