The mortality is lower from those, but it's higher with things like atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, etc etc...

Those are just relative rates. There are people who are sick that are underweight and smokers are skinnier. I have a BMI of about 14-16, and don't consider myself underweight.

Well, according to the chart, overweight people live longer than normal weight people.

But then again, the government's body mass index has been criticized for a while. IIRC, it doesn't take into account whether the body mass is fat or muscle. Thus I would assume that bulkier people who exercise a lot would be more likely to fall into that category. But that's just conjecture on my part.

No, according to the chart, fewer overweight people die of the listed causes. It says nothing about the age of death for any of the groups.

Ugh....I just lost a whole damned rant about this issue....

basically, in summation, most folks who workout only do so for cosmetic reasons, so they look pretty but are actually as unhealthy as the common Joe who is sitting his fat ass on the couch.

Weight can be deceptive, because the fat person can be healthy while the buff person can be unhealthy, and vice versa. It's not weight that should be focused on, it's high body fat percentage (as that seems to have the strongest correlation with disease and poor health)....but the most accurate test for that is the water tank method, and most people don't like it. BMI is just bad bad bad....its inaccurate.

Well, it stands to reason that if fewer of them are dying, it's because they're living longer. smile.gif

you can be a skinny beanpole and have high cholesterol and die of a heart attack before fat joe on the couch

the only way you can be 100% healthy is to do EVERYTHING right and that's pretty much fucking impossible so accept the fact that no matter how you look you will die of something!!!

YAY!!!

Just saying, more skinny people might get those diseases, but they might get them later in life and die older. I don't know that that's the case, just that you can't make the jump from this chart to life expectancy.
