Is it possible to blow a dimmer switch? I plugged it in and blew the light I was messing with but it kind of seems like the switch itself is blown, is that possible?

Its something a ee should understand at least. You can build your own dimmer with a chopper circuit and a timer of some sort. Old dimmer switches used something like a resistor, but that wastes power. Instead the new ones use pulse width modulation on the circuit in the khz range and vary the duty cycle (how much on time vs total time in one cycle) The dimmer switch probably blew its triac.
