One of my friends was writing a note on facebook which got me to thinking.
The media is all up in arms about the Vick 'Em shirts because it's about animal cruelty. Why don't they report on the original meaning of "Gig 'em?" http://aggietraditions.tamu.edu/gigem.shtml QUOTE At a yell practice before the 1930 TCU game, A&M board of regent Pinky Downs '06 shouted, "What are we going to do to those Horned Frogs?" His muse did not fail him as he improvised, borrowing a term from frog hunting. "Gig 'em, Aggies!" he said as he made a fist with his thumb extended straight up. So in fact, it comes from killing frogs. Not any frogs, but the horned frogs, which are in fact, a threatened species. Not to mention their "Saw 'em off" stickers they put on cars, which implies sawing off the horns of a longhorn. Isn't that also animal cruelty? I mean its like Tech is so hard up for anything they can call a tradition that they'll outright steal anything they can. -------------------- |

what the hell is frog hunting? what is the purpose of that Oh wiki, how I love thee... QUOTE Frog gigging (commonly " frog giggin' ") in North America is the practice of hunting frogs with a spear.[1] The spear is called a gig and usually has at least three tines, like a trident. Flashlights are sometimes used to daze the frogs, for easier capture. A fishing license will be required in some jurisdictions roffles = fishing license to hunt frogs -------------------- ![]() |

You mean the same stickers Tech has "borrowed"? I mean its like Tech is so hard up for anything they can call a tradition that they'll outright steal anything they can. I need to apologize for the bitterness in this previous post. It's just I truly believe Tech has a lot to offer, a lot that can be uniquely Tech, but some asshat does something asinine--like the vick 'em shirt--or steals something from another university. I remember when I first got here I saw people doing the wrecking crew sign. I though wtf? God damn it! Tech can be something so great if we can keep it from being knocked down every time something grand occurs. People should be talking about how Tech will win the Big 12 south and have a good chance of upsetting for the Big 12 title instead of the classless vick 'em shirt. -------------------- |

this kind of negative press for tech would normally bother me, but most news programs I've seen it on show it, and try to talk about it seriously, but end up laughing and basically saying the aggies are a bunch of prudes and that it's a joke. even here in Houston the radio peeps were laughin their asses off. rush mentioned it on his show the other day and couldn't stop laughing either. and conan o'brien did a mascot thing last night, and had a "texas tech cheerleader w/tourettes" (even though it was completely the wrong color)

I've never seen a "Saw 'Em Off" sticker while in Lubbock. Except when the Aggies are in town.
