I think unification might be beneficial to all of our economies. It worked for the European Union. And now that the Canadian Dollar is worth more than our dollar, it might even help our currency.

what's the structure to the EU anyhow? I mean the countries are still separate and governed separately right? it's just a common currency and what else?

Yeah, but all the countries in the EU have fairly equal economies, dont they? I mean, Mexico is a 3rd world country (if I remember correctly)... why would that be beneficial (to all those who said they are for it)?

i'm also wondering this. the only thing i can think of is that they have

1) open borders
2) same currency
3) free trade (i think?)

so, NAFTA is already free trade...so, just open borders and same currency? maybe it would'nt be that bad, i dont know.

but then again, i also think about this...

however, maybe somehow it would all work out because mexicans would be doing all our labor or something, so we wouldn't be having china doing it for us? and then north america's economy would be going up, and china's would go down. is that right?

The EU is not composed of entirely equal economies. They just admitted recently (a controversial decision) some eastern European countries like Bulgaria and Romania which are DEFINITELY not developed countries.

Also, just because you are in the EU does not necessarily mean that you use the same currency. I know that both Denmark and the United Kingdom are in the EU but don't use the Euro (kroner and pound respectively).

The EU has a governing structure with courts and all, but it's a giant clusterfuck. If I remember correctly, they rotate the presidency to a member state every 6 mos.

Here is the wikipedia article if you want to read more.

bah.. yeah that'd never happen here... if anything this could work as long as it's essentially an american controlled takeover of canada and mexico.

Eh, Mexico MIGHT go for that, but I seriously doubt Canada would.
