this is just a completely random tip i saw in my men's health mag that made a lot of sense. once a month or so, jack up your water heater to >140, and run all the faucets on full hot water for a few minutes. it'll clean out and kill any bacteria in the pipes.

If I had my way, my water heater would probably be set that high all the time. I sometimes like really hot showers/baths. Mmmmm... lobster skin...
