Hey, since we're on the topic of algebra, how do you solve something like y^3 - 6y^2 - y + 6 = 0 by hand? I have completely forgotten how to do a third order+ polynomial without a calculator.

You'd solve that one by factoring by grouping. Notice that the first two have a common factor of y^2 and the latter two have a common factor of -1, so you can factor it as (y^2-1)(y-6) but then you have difference of two squares, so you have (y+1)(y-1)(y-6)

Alternatively, you could use Descartes' Rule of Signs along with the Rational Zero Theorem.

Lastly, you could try using a numerical method by hand, but that would just be a pain and might as well use a calculator.

I may or may not teach a math class this summer. Dunno if they'll let me even though I told them I changing majors. If I do, it'd be Math 1300 - Contemporary Math. Will be interesting to learn what contemporary math is.
