Apple not looking to 'proactively disable' unlocked iPhones

Posted Sep 25th 2007 1:39PM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Cellphones
Shortly after Apple released a brief statement yesterday regarding iPhone modifications and their impacts on warranties, the firm's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing has stepped up to clarify a few issues. In a recent interview, Phil Schiller was quoted as saying that the upcoming software update "has nothing to do with proactively disabling a phone that is unlocked or hacked." Furthermore, he added that it was "unfortunate that some programs have caused damage to the iPhone software," but he noted that "Apple could not be responsible for... those consequences." All in all, it doesn't sound like Apple is changing its stance, but it seems safe to say that Cupertino won't be listening to any crying should subsequent updates render your hacked iPhone useless.

just set your iphone to default before installing any updates. just in case. i wouldn't worry about the install program. i'd only worry if you hacked it to work with another carrier.

They're saying this won't cut it.

Apparently the people who came up with the iPhone unlock are working on a solution. Be on the lookout for that.

Firmware 1.1.1 released today.

Updates:

- iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
- Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
- Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites of music controls
- Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
- Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
- Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
- Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
- Support for TV Out
- Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
- New Passcode lock time intervals
- Adjustable alert volume

Looks as if updating with just the Installer.app hack installed is going well. It's just wiping out all third party apps and still working fine.
Not going well if a different carrier SIMM is being used.
I'll try it when i get home this afternoon.

I wish the iTunes worked with the cellular data network and not only WiFi.

Also, I wish iTunes offered Doctor Who and Torchwood LOL

I mentioned this in the SA thread but everyone there was too busy sucking Steve Job's Cock about how he wanted a great user experience instead of the more obvious and reasonable explanation that if the Wifi Store worked with EDGE, AT&T would want a cut of the sales, and that would cut into Apple's profit margin.

[sarcasm]
But of course Apple and Steve Jobs are benevolent entities devoted to furthering the cause of humanity and wouldn't stab you or your mom in the back in order to make a quick buck...so they would never think more about their profit margin than their consumer, right? RIGHT?
[/sarcasm]
